The Black Douglas as a confirmed inspiration for JRRT Can't Post

I have not read this work but see it listed as one of JRRT's influences - wargs, Sauron, seige of Gondor etc.

Was a film ever made? I suppose the Outlaw King is based on him.

Well, [In reply to] Can't Post

Outlaw King is based explicitly on Robert Bruce.

The first historical Black Douglas (Sir James Douglas, Lord of Douglas) was a highly effective commander under Bruce, notable for his earlier guerilla campaigns and then for his deeds at Bannockburn. He finally was killed in 1329 in Spain, fighting the Moors. As with many historic figures, a body of tales and legends coalesced around him over time.

However, Crockett's adventure yarn had nothing to do with that Black Douglas, but with his relatively obscure descendant William Douglas, 6th Earl of Douglas, who lived briefly some century and a half later, and was notable chiefly for having been murdered at the Black Dinner- a clear inspiration for GRR Martin's Red Wedding.
