Quite a bit over my head [In reply to] Can't Post

It was nice seeing a discussion of Tolkien's languages where the narrator could say, rather than just write, the sounds involved. After that I rather got lost as my familiarity with Sindarin goes more in the direction of etymologies, based on written words in the books like placenames, etc. This article got going strongly in the direction of phonology, which I've never been very good at, so I'm afraid I dropped out around 06:00.

The critic cheerfully introduces himself by saying he's going to get his facts wrong, and indeed he did in one area I do know something about. Tolkien's famous remark about his stories being written to display the languages was a reference to the genesis of the Silmarillion and the First Age tales. He did not write The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in order to give Sindarin a story-vehicle, as our cheerfully wrong critic assures us.

Thanks for the link. Am I correct in guessing that 'conlang' means 'constructed language'?

Yes, conlang is a pretty common abbreviation of constructed language // [In reply to] Can't Post
