As someone who has formerly posted a lot here, I think it's right that I should worry about doing things that prevent other people from participating (even if that is thoughtlessly or accidentely). But there's only so much I can do about that without receiving some feedback about how things might be improved. And feedback of another sort - interesting replies, friendly encouragement - is why I've bothered posting things here rather than on one of the many other Internet self-publishing platforms ('WargPress' or 'Bolger' for example, or even 'Teleporno'). So people who could make a brief reply or comment have a role to play too, I think.

I would like to participate - but am not sure yet how much. I am constrained for time, and do not know if I could undertake leading a discussion. Which is a pity - I have discussed three chapters in the Sil, and four of the Hobbit - but in LotR, only one chapter per book! If I will be able to, it would behoove me to improve on that record.

A long-absent tome is creeping stealthily back into the venerated Reading Room. The signs are clear: it is time for the final chapter of Bored of the Rings to be discussed. And as squire performed the obligations for Chapter VIII, it falls to me to take Chapter IX, and make posts against a sea of Boggies, and by discussing, end them. It will probably take five or six posts to wade through the chapter, but these can be interspersed with the "legitimate" discussions. I shall endeavor to commence this undertaking sometime in January!

Fantastic - just one possible vacancy left in 2019 (23 December), unless that's too close to Christmas, in which case we can start taking bookings for January 2020! I'll take that one, the underappreciated "In the House of Tom Bombadil"

We're now 'booked' up to Monday 23 December. Thank you once again to our volunteers! If somebody would like to take the next Monday, 30 December, please do. Or take a Monday in January if you like (the gap between Christmas and New Year might be particularly good or particularly bad for people as a time to host a discussion). I think though that there is no rush to book further chapters. People can add themselves to the schedule when and if they decide they'd like to do a chapter. Some potential leaders will, I'm sure, want to wait until nearer the time when they know more about how busy they might be. And some people may feel more confident about volunteering after they've seen some discussions, have a better idea of what to do, and see that we're having fun. If we do run out of chapter leaders we can stop and discuss whether the idea has run its course or isn't working etc. But I think there's no point in schedulling a time to stop and take stock yet, because we don't know when we might need to.

It just goes to show that things are coming on quckly now, and you do need to check the schedule thread to see what's happening! I decided to slot in on 20 Jan after Uncle Iorlas (13 Jan) , thus giving us a bit of a New year's break, or enough time to do Solicitr's chapter justice in the New Year if replies come in slowly over Christmas.

Excellent suggestion, Dernwyn. I've been mulling the dilemma of the uncompleted BotR discussion for some time, with little hope of a solution given the desultory pace and attendance here lately. I pledge to cover the oft-forgotten, left-out-of-the-film, and utterly-neglible final chapter X, "Be It Ever So Horrid" at some indeterminate point after you do all the real work with Chapter IX.

I'd been thinking of including Chapter X's full page-and-a-half as an epilogue to chapter IX, but you're welcome to tackle it! That will be a fitting official ending of the discussion.

Note that the black sphere is substantial, but the Ballhog itself is described as a "shadow". Does this mean that the creature is merely metaphorical, and the ball is dribbling itself? Typical Tolkienesque ambiguity!

And getting all misty eyed nostalgic, Oh for that time when I could go out to where I wanted, could dine, go to a bar, watch sports with a crowd and had never heard of a certain virius which was about to be unleashed upon the world. Of course, that was all about to change, but still!

But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us. And decide wisely. I've started wondering about what the stories are that will be told, of this time.
