All six films are to be released (and remastered) in UHD, no doubt following the buildup to Amazon's and New Line's TV series: https://www.4kfilme.de/...inen-auf-4k-blu-ray/

I assume this is simply a cash in rather than a full blown restoration, as much that's humanely possible anyway. Becuase that work would take a good few years. unless they've been doing it on the quiet? Although i welcome it, just watching a blue Ray upscale to my 4k TV shows things you never noticed before, the Lotr blu ray set is just a bit rubbish I hope its not another in between release untill we get the ultimate final release that's been talked about by pj.

Its possible that work on this version was going on quietly for some time now. Things have been very quiet - suspiciously so - at WingNut films recently. Even if its a 2K upscale, those can look very good if given the right time and money. After all, most of the time the added detail isn't so substantial that it can't be interpolated by an upscaling algorithm: most of the time its just more colour information for existing objects within the frame.

New bonus stuff would be the only reason for me to buy this. But that's unlikely, right?
