**Party Game: Last Lines Can't Post

Happy Bilbo's and Frodo's Birthdays! In their honor, I'd like to present a quiz which is also a tribute to our dear TORnsib, weaver, who has sailed West.

Once in the Reading Room, she had made some interesting observations about the last lines of the chapters in LotR.

So here is the Last Lines Quiz. Below are the last sentences of 15 of the chapters in LotR: 10 you should be able to recognize, but the other 5 are challenges! Can you name that chapter? Closed book, if you can!

1. But the next day there came no dawn, and the Grey Company passed on into the darkness of the Storm of Mordor and were lost to mortal sight; but the Dead followed them.

2. "Very polite."

3. "There will be no dawn.'"

4. Towards it they now hurried desiring only to find a fire, and a door between them and the night.

5. With a last effort Frodo, dropping his sword, slipped the Ring from his finger and closed his right hand tight upon it.

6. Wailing they passed under the waiting shadow of the trees; and from that shadow none ever came again.

7. "To me it feels more like falling asleep again."

8. Frodo did not see him again for a long time.

9. Gimli cast his hood over his face.

10. Rohan had come at last.

And the Challengers:

11. "Let us go!"

12. "Ride on!"

13. "Not yet."

14. "Good night!"

15. "Sleep well!"

Oh, this one is tough [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the challenge, Dernwyn. I find it hard remembering where chapters split. And remembering chapter names. My memory overwrites Tolkien's chapter titles with my own, such as "The chapter where Frodo got stabbed by the Nazgul on Weathertop." Clearly I am a NARF.
  1. Passing of the Grey Company
  2. Flotsam and Jetsam?
  3. Minas Tirith (or The Siege of Gondor. Or string or nothing.)
  4. The Old Forest (or In the House of Tom Bombadil)
  5. A Knife in the Dark?
  6. Helm's Deep
  7. [ugh. The chapter before "Scouring of the Shire"]
  8. The Shadow of the Past?
  9. A Journey in the Dark?
  10. The Siege of Gondor
  11. The Mirror of Galadriel
  12. The Muster of Rohan?
  13. [no clue]
  14. [no clue]
  15. [no clue]

A good quiz well done, I will have a go [In reply to] Can't Post

Although I am doing this without looking and I might get the odd word wrong in the precise nature of my answers. Anyway

1 The passing of the grey company
2 Flotsam and Jetsam
3 Minas Tirith
4 Fog on the Barrow-Downs
5 A knife in the dark
6 Helms Deep
7 Many partings
8 An unexpected party
9 A journey in the dark
10 The siege of Gondor
11 Don't know. After Helm's Deep and before the Voice of Saruman. One Chapter name I think I have forgotten.
12 The Ride of the Rohirrim
13 Stairs of Cirith ungol, I know it is a Gollum one, but I can't quite remember the right chapter!
14 The Window on the West. Spoken by Faramir to Sam I think
15 This one rings a bell, but I am not sure. Give me about six weeks and I will come back to you

Quick answers [In reply to] Can't Post

1. The Passing of the Grey Company (mentioned in the quote)
2. The Road to Isengard.
3. Minas Tirith.
4. Fog on the Barrow-downs (I feel pretty confident; it could be The Old Forest, but I think that chapter ends with the hobbits being surrounded in golden light).
5. A Knife in the Dark.
6. Helm's Deep.
7. Homeward Bound.
8. A Long-expected Party.
9. A Journey in the Dark.
10. The Siege of Gondor.
11. The Mirror of Galadriel (I think).
12. The Muster of Rohan.
13. The Stairs of Cirith Ungol (this one was a poser, but I think I have it correct.
14. Many Meetings (Hmm. The last two were quite a challange - but I think neither Three is Company nor Strider end with good-night wishes). So I will guess the two other options I can think of).
15. The Window on the West?

Thank you gor this quiz! It was quite a challange indeed.

Endings endings... [In reply to] Can't Post

1. I would guess The Paths of the Dead chapter. Not 100% sure about the name
2. Flotsam and Jetsam
3. Uncertain. Either one of the early Gondor chapters, or it could also be Muster of Rohan
4. I think this is when they arrive to Crickhollow. Is that Three is company?
5. A knife in the dark
6. Helms Deep I think
7. Uncertain. Perhaps one of the Frodo-Sam chapters
8. Unexpected Party
9. Journey in the dark
10. Siege of Gondor

The rest are very difficult without looking them up.

11. Might be Voice of Saruman
12. Gonna change on Ride of Rohirrim
13. No idea
14 or 15 could be the one where they arrive to Tom Bombadills house, Can't say which.

"Not yet" appears several times in that chapter. [In reply to] Can't Post

Even some of the "easy" chapters gave me pause.

1. The Passing of the Grey Company.
2. The Road to Isengard
3. Minas Tirith
4. Fog on the Barrow-downs
5. A Knife in the Dark
6. Helm's Deep
7. Homeward Bound
8. A Long-expected Party
9. A Journey in the Dark
10. The Siege of Gondor
11. The Voice of Saruman (?)
12. The White Rider
13. The Stairs of Cirith Ungol
14. The Field of Cormallen (?)
15. Many Meetings (?)

Treachery, treachery I fear; treachery of that miserable creature.

But so it must be. Let us remember that a traitor may betray himself and do good that he does not intend.

Answers! [In reply to] Can't Post

Well done, everyone! I thought you might be up to a bit of challenge. Not a bad effort [In reply to] Can't Post

I got a few right. I have to say that while you say easy ones, I can't think of many other books where I could name the chapter without looking by the last line. Even some of the Shakespeare plays that I know of and have seen many times would make me think a bit!
