**Party Game: How about a Haiku or Drabble? Can't Post

Lets celebrate Bilbo and Frodo's Birthdays AND World Hobbit Day with a drabble or a haiku! You'll get an extra scoop of ice cream if your theme is about their birthday, The Hobbit / The Lord of the Rings (movie or book) or J.R.R. Tolkien.

A drabble is a short fanfic, poem, limerick (etc.) of exactly 100 words in length not including the title.

OR

How do you do a haiku? A haiku is verse with a specific structure of 3 lines made up of 5 syllables, then 7 syllables and 5 syllables again. You can have as many verses as you like.

I've made some examples of a drabble and a haiku to start things off. Don't be shy! These are really fun once you get rolling :)

A Hobbit's Drabble
Bilbo lived in the Shire in a hole warm and clean
Till a Wizard and Dwarves pulled him into their scheme

Confronted by Dragon, Troll, Elf, Warg and Spider
His thoughts turned to home and his food in the larder

He didn't want praise, bright jools, silver or gold
He was held by the job, though not burglar or bold

Fighting hunger and fear; finding Sting and a Ring
The good hobbit's grit grew, saving all through his cunning

He stayed true to his word; with his friends facing battle
Till he finally went home while his treasure bags rattle

A Party Haiku
Set out for the field
The day is finally here
One gross fills the chairs

Fireworks by Gandalf
Mathoms spread by Mad Baggins
All praise the great Host

The feast is consumed
And the speech is good and short
What could he do next?

Your Turn! :D

Thanks for the game, Gramma. Here's my attempt:

Party of hobbits:
Fireworks, mathoms, the best wine;
But please, no speeches.

Road to Crickhollow,
Black Riders, High Elves, breakfast,
Maggots, no leeches.

Barrow Downs and fog,
Rescued by Bombadil; run
naked, no breaches. Blush

Here's a drabble... [In reply to] Can't Post

The Morning After…
It was the morning after the long-expected party. Hobbits picked glumly through the wreckage, helping themselves to leftovers, and taking down tents and bunting. There was a distinct sense of anti-climax, especially given the dramatic manner of Bilbo’s exit. Frodo found himself wondering where the rascally old hobbit was. ‘Well away from all the cleaning up, at any rate!’ he muttered wrily, scraping stale buns into the pig bucket. ‘The things some folk do to avoid a little work’. On the road to Rivendell, Bilbo smiled a secret, satisfied smile as he stepped out, breathing in the crisp autumn air.

Frodo Lives! and he's stoned. [In reply to] Can't Post

The odd thing was, Frodo loved the scenery. True, he and Sam were lost in the Emyn Muil, without Strider to guide them. Mordor was on the horizon in all its hazy horror, but getting down from the rocky hillsides was just impossible. Yet the rocks had a kind of raw beauty that made him just stop and look, more than Sam could believe. “It’s just stones, Mr. Frodo,” he’d say. “Let’s try that path over there.” “I know, Sam. But look at the colors – the texture – the light! If this is just stones, I want to live … stoned.”

Dribble a drabble [In reply to] Can't Post

September Again

All these years later
Merry, Pip, Fatty and Sam
would gather at the Dragon

Each fall face an urge...
Visit the Road, South or West?
So they raise a mug.

Not just for Baggins;
For Treebeard, Tom, Maggot, Bill…
Fellowships lives on.
