These tapestries are quite amazing, but the look on Christopher's face as he sees them for the first time is one of the most moving things I have ever seen. https://www.youtube.com/...h_Sfq88Y&fbclid=

The tapestries, and also Christopher Tolkien's reaction. Thanks, Voronwë!

I was worried after the Amazon-deal whether he might have given up the "adaption-fight" by taking to bitterness, but at least in this video, he is so genuine and joyful, great to see, and beautiful. It seems that really, as you grow old, you can become frustrated and grumpy, or you can become awesome. My high respect.

Thank you for the link, Voronwe. I agree, the tapestries are beautifully crafted, but seeing Christopher and his reactions and hearing him speak is best of all. I can see (and hear) his father in him. So he "watered" the foreground tree in the Rivendell painting? What a wonderful story of the relationship between father and son!

have to wonder about that story, though, because the chronology seems...off. The Rivendell painting was one of those commissioned by A&U for The Hobbit after it had been accepted for publication, so it was done in 1937. Christopher would have been about 12 years old-- I can see this story involving a little boy of 5 or 6, but 12?

what could he have been remembering? It certainly made quite an impression on him, a tear dripping on a painting his father was working on.

What he has given us through all these decades is such a gift and so generous. I love seeing the delight and wonder on his face. AND I'm glad that he saw there were young people there enjoying his Father's work, too. Thank you for this!
