Should be [In reply to] Can't Post

Besides Amazon spending All The Money in what is plainly its bid for a flagpole franchise, CGI technology only gets better and better with time. Think how dated much of the LR's CGI already looks.

Of course, CGI has its own pitfalls, as a crutch that gets in the way of good writing and direction (think of the end-battles in The Avengers or Man of Steel: pointless, weightless obliteration of bundles of pixels, with absolutely none of the impact of, say, the ultra-low-budget Henry V). CGI is coming dangerously close to doing to film what Protools has done to music.

Naturally if you are going to have vast armies or the destruction of Numenor it's required; but let's hope the directors keep it in its place.

GOT has been doing it right for the most part. [In reply to] Can't Post

The best CGI is that which you don't necessarily even notice is there; cities, castles, mountains and other backdrops can be produced so well that they'd be undetectable if not for the fact that we know such structures don't exist in the shooting locations. Creatures, like the dragons, need far more effort to be made believable, but leaps and strides has been made in that territory, as well. They just need to handle their appearances sparingly, both for budget reasons, and to keep the audience from getting overexposed to the effects.

I just hope it is used sparingly. CGi killed The Hobbit films for me personally

Its very rare [In reply to] Can't Post

for me that CGI ruins a film for me. If the story's good, I'll watch it no matter the quality of the effects.

A lot of films which people enjoy have effects that have come to be dated by now, but people can still watch and enjoy them based on the quality of their story.

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

Even with the massive budget that Game of Thrones has, they still are quite limited in what they can do. People often joke that we never see Jon's direwolf anymore because the CGI budget doesn't allow for it. TV shows need to pick and choose their battles, so to speak, and a Hobbit-level CGI undertaking simply isn't doable with shows like GOT, and presumably won't be realistic for this Middle-earth series either.

I think CGI could be kept to a minimum [In reply to] Can't Post

CGI is fine in moderation, but it isn't needed in every shot.

yes... [In reply to] Can't Post

but for me, it wasn't so much the cgi, but rather what they decided to do with it. What really ruined it for me though is what they did to Tolkien's story.

The Baby Bear's Bed [In reply to] Can't Post

The special effects used in the Game Of Thrones series (as well as West World) were amazing. They rarely stood out and when the did they were absolutely real. In other words they were just right. They supported the story perfectly. What more would you want. KS
