Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! April 11 Can't Post

Greetings Fellow Travellers!

Welcome and well met :D I hope you're enjoying your travels and that your mileage is growing and growing! Remember, you're not limited to just putting one foot in front of the other. The world of our Walk includes pretty much anything that has you moving about. The idea is to have a goal of getting a bit of "exercise" (nasty word in my book) and p'raps follow the Fellowship via charts created by Karen Wynn Fonstad (see link below). I really enjoy following the charts because it gives me more of an appreciation of just how much the hobbits and their companions endured.

So please tell how you're doing :) Are you a Chartie (follows charts) or are you more of a wandering Ranger or are you just following your impulses like gollum? It all works :D

Frodo, Sam and I are on the Road again… although Frodo is the only one who knows we're ultimately travelling to the Grey Havens. Sam and I are just enjoying a quiet time together in this comforting Spring weather. As we ride along, Sam points out the tree where Frodo had hidden from the Black Rider a few years ago. We decide to stop by the huge oak tree they had crept inside to eat when we begin to hear Elves singing. Soon Galadriel, Celeborn, Elrond, and others appear on the valley road below, and there with them is Bilbo! Sam and I know this isn't a chance meeting, and we join the Company on their way along the Road to the Havens. Frodo is quiet, but Sam is visibly shaken about what is happening. O Sam....

See you on the Road!

Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! April 18 [In reply to] Can't Post

Greetings Fellow Travellers!

I hope you're enjoying some great weather! I know if you're living in the central to southeastern states of the U.S., you're getting hit with more dangerous weather... so I hope it sails past you with nothing but a bit of soft rain.

Here in mid-Michigan, we had 4 inches of snow on Tuesday and nearly 60 degrees today. GO FIGURE! How are you coming along on your Quest? It's always good to be on an adventure, even if it's just exercising your imagination ;) Remember... if you'd like me to help you figure out where you are on any of the Charts, I'll be glad to get you there!

The hobbits and I are travelling to the Grey Havens with an incredible group of Elves. We've passed south of Tuckburrow and crossed the road from Sarn Ford to Waymeet. It's a somber group, but the Elves look at each other and smile as they enjoy seeing Bilbo, Frodo and Sam riding side-by-side and chattering about very hobbity things.

See you on the Road!

Long way around? [In reply to] Can't Post

So, gramma, you're taking a scenic route to the Havens rather than using the Great East Road for the entire journey.

I'm a victim of circumstances! [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean, I could go on the Great Road, but I'd be going alone :(

I think there are 2 reasons for the "scenic route." One- to avoid traffic and prying eyes. Two- I'll bet they're doing it for Bilbo and probably Frodo and Gandalf so they can have one last visit with their beloved Shire. I've always thought that the Shire was as much of a home in Middle-earth as Gandalf ever had. It's hard being a Wanderer... and he enjoyed hobbits and "THE" Shire (as he corrected Radagast) so much.

Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! April 25 [In reply to] Can't Post

Greetings Fellow Travellers!

Here we are at the last Thursday of April and the eve of an AWESOME celebration! It's a two-fer... TORn's 20th TORniversary and Founders Day's 10th TORniversary! BUSY DAYS! So "walk" on over to Fiesta Friday tomorrow for a party drink and then all over the Boards to enjoy the games and activities that will be added all weekend and into next week. You'll also fine a bunch of historical stories of TORn's journey.

So let's hear how you're doing on your Quest! I hope you're having fun just playing along at your own pace and your own rules!

The remaining hobbits and I are travelling to the Grey Havens with Galadriel, Elrond and many of their households. This is a solemn journey, but there's also much solace knowing Middle-earth's War of the Rings ended with the security of allies and kindreds throughout the land… for their days in Middle-earth. I can't help but think of what Gandalf once said, "Yet it is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule." pg 190 III

See you on the Road!

Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! AN EXPLANATION & HISTORY [In reply to] Can't Post

Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! AN EXPLANATION & HISTORY

In 2003, a LotR-themed fitness website called The Éowyn Challenge was created based on (and supported by) Karen Wynn Fonstad's book, The Atlas of Middle-earth. Her book is jam-packed with detailed maps she created based on the stories of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and includes extensive information on each of the journeys by The Fellowship (LotR) and The Company (TH).

On March 18, 2003, jordan the discursive found The Éowyn Challenge website and got us on the Road. TORn members began participating in The Éowyn Challenge and created our own Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! thread where we share our weekly progress.

For The Éowyn Challenge website, Ms. Fonstad created 20 charts with day-by-day, mile-by-mile progress of Tolkien's characters based on the maps in her book. We use these charts to log our own mileage as we join them in their travels through Middle-earth. The charts can be found in the Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! Resources Page link below to cut/paste and help you track your progress.

The idea is to pick any chart you'd like to travel and keep track of your mileage as you walk or perform other activities and apply your effort to those charts. Soon you will find you've travelled the 458 miles from Bag End to Rivendell, then the 462 miles to Lothlórien... and so on until you finally reach the Grey Havens. However, these mileage charts for The Hobbit end at the Lonely Mountain; so I have completed my own charts following Bilbo and Gandalf on their journey back home (fanfic).

A great way to start is to copy/paste the Bag End to Rivendell chart from the Éowyn Challenge website, then start your journey by walking, exercise, biking, yard work, house cleaning... any way that keeps you on the road. The best part of our Walk to Rivendell is that there are no rules of how to achieve your goals. Just have fun and keep going until you fulfill your own personal quests. If you have a break and get delayed, just pick up where you left off and keep on going! There's no way to fail :)

The website for the Walk explains things more clearly; please check out the The Éowyn Challenge site, especially the Home page and the Tools page containing all of the sites Walk charts (also found in the Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! Resources Page)

See you on the Road!!!

Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! May 2 [In reply to] Can't Post

Greetings Fellow Travellers!
LOOK! It's already May! The days are just flying by, and I'm doing my best not to waste a single one! I was SO STOKED when I took a couple of hours last Saturday to get to a few of the yard sales going on during my town's Maple Syrup Festival.

Quick catch-up... I live near a farming town, and every Spring they hang buckets on the hundred of sugar maple trees in town. They make syrup out of it, and on the last full weekend of April, we PARTY HARD! Pancakes, local-made sausage, SYRUP, fair rides, collectible car show, parade through town with a bunch of tractors, and the whole town and surrounding area have yard sales.

I found a replacement treadmill for $25. The one I've been using for at least 1 hr a day had the belt so shredded that there was enough left to walk one foot in front of the other... about 8" wide. This "new" one is like flying after crawling! I'm so happy :D

So how are you coming along on your Quest? Are you able to get outside and have some yard fun, or are you in that part of the planet where you're moving inside? I hope all is well and that you're making good headway. Do Tell what you're up to!

Gandalf, the hobbits and I are still travelling with a majestic group of Elves as we make for the Grey Havens.

See you on the Road!

Walk to Rivendell Shields and Articles [In reply to] Can't Post

Tehanu Articles from the homepage

The Shieldmaidens: Walk to Rivendell. March 13, 2003
Walk to Rivendell: The Website March 26, 2003
The Éowyn Challenge: One Year On April 2, 2004

To finish up on our look at the history of TheOneRing.net and The Éowyn Challenge, here are some homepage articles from Tehanu, lists of past Walkers, past Walk Leaders, and a bunch of info on the Shield Page.

When you go into The Éowyn Challenge site now, the Shield Page is gone. Even when the site was very active, there were more than a few times that the Page would crash and all our stats would be lost. We were encouraged to make copies of our shields regularly in the event of the unthinkable! I found one of those saves from September 2, 2011 that I did for the entire group of Walkers. Take a look below for examples of the Shields and the list of 30 TORn Walkers at the time.

History of our Walk Leaders:
1. jordan the discursive lead us from Feb/March 2003 until February 2004 (weekly post). She found the Éowyn site and got us all on the road.
2. Miradan lead us from February 2004 until November 2007 (officially released December 28, 07) (weekly post)
3. Finding Frodo lead us from December 28, 2007 to September 2, 2011 (She changed it to monthly post during the holidays 2009/2010)
4. Arandiel took over hoping to work with Wraith Buster from September 2, 2011 until December 24, 2015 when stopped posting.
5. grammaboodawg took over on 3/28/17 to current

2012 names of many TORnsibs participating in the Walk to Rivendell:
Finding Frodo
Arwen's daughter
Alassëa Eruvande

This is a description of how The Éowyn Challenge started found in their website:

"The Walk to Rivendell
458 MILES from Hobbiton to Rivendell!
And the road goes ever on and on...

The original Walk to Rivendell Challenge began on Monday, March 17th, 2003, but it is never too late to join in. We have other distances throughout Middle Earth that you may choose to travel. The founder of this fitness challenge is our Ranger Jewel. She began researching the miles, milestones and time frame of the hobbits’ journey to Rivendell in Fellowship of the Ring. We were later joined by Karen Wynn Fonstad, author of the Atlas of Middle-earth. Mrs. Fonstad provided us with very detailed charts of all the Fellowship’s journey through Middle Earth. Much of the information provided is exclusive to the Éowyn Challenge and can be found nowhere else. The challenge is very simple and flexible; anyone can develop their own variation on this basic idea." [quoted from EowynChallenge.com]

On September 2, 2011, There are 1248 walkers who have traveled 494037.53 miles.

TORn's Shield is Blue

Each of these coloured shields represents a group of participating Walkers. Sadly, I haven't found a key (YET!) of which colour belonged to each group. IIRC, you had to hover over each shield to see what their group's name/site was.

Here's a list of The Éowyn Challenge's Favorite Lord of the Rings web sites. It's safe to assume that many (if not all) of these sites are attached to the colored shields. We know the blue shield represents TheOneRing.net.

TheOneRing.net - Great resource for all news about the books, movies, and actors.*
LordoftheRings.net - New Line Cinema’s Lord of the Rings web site.
Tolkien Online - All Tolkien. All the Time. Good fan site. Nice community discussion board about all topics Tolkien related.*
BarrowDowns.net - Another good LOTR trivia and fan site. Get your hobbit, elf, dwarf, and ork name here. Parental warning: Some adult fan fiction here.*
Tolkien Trail - An interactive tour of Middle Earth with related games, art, music, and so on.
Tolkien Society - The official site of The Tolkien Society, a group dedicated to spread the word of the Professor and encourage further exploration of his work. For the very serious fan.
John Howe - The classic Tolkien illustrator’s official website, one of Jax’s favorite Tolkien sites.
The Encyclopedia of Arda: An Interactive Guide to J.R.R. Tolkien - Learn about the people, places, and events of Middle-Earth. This site has good descriptions of places along the road to Rivendell.
The Lord of the Rings Fanatics Site - LOTR site for and by Tolkien Fanatics with guided tours of Middle-Earth, 111 question quiz, art collections, creative and product specials, sound clips, merchandise shop, time lines, forum, community and much more...

Here's an example of what the shield page looked like. It showed the name of each Walker along with how many miles they've clocked and what their goal/target was. Then the shields in their group's colour lined up next to their name. Each shield represented 25 miles. We'd go into the site and key in how many miles we achieved, and the site would automatically update your total and add the appropriate number of shields to your tally. To see mine on this date, go to the end of this post. Remember, I've been at this since we started on March 18, 2003. ;)

of a treadmill? Good heavens, I didn't know that was even possible! And to come across another one for just $25...it was "meant" to happen!

That syrup festival is making me hungry for pancakes. Too bad the snow's gone from our areas, one of the best things is real maple syrup on fresh snow! Did they have maple snow-cones?

No maple snow cones :( [In reply to] Can't Post

not that I saw advertised, anyway. I'd be SHOCKED if they didn't have some somewhere there. One of those yard salers could have sold some. They had all sorts of foods and beverages (brownies, cookies, bake sales, burgers, hotdogs, etc.). I'm always a sucker for those little ones selling lemonade or home-made bracelets, etc. They sit off to one side at the table of wares with so many people and confusion going on. This year it was quite cold and windy... so I just have to get something from them. "50cents? WUPS better take the dollar!"

Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! May 9 [In reply to] Can't Post

Greetings Fellow Walkers!

The Road goes ever on... and so do we! :D How are you coming along on your Quest? I'm enjoying my country roads again. During the winter, there's just too much ice and cold and yuck for me to tolerate those walks anymore. But now I'm having a great time chugging along and looking for pebble/stones/rocks. Out here, I'm even finding old rusted truck and tractor parts that were buried for a buhzillion years and slowly resurfaced when the road are grated. My favourite walks are after it rains. The stones are cleaned off and reveal some stunning colours and patterns. I found 3 this week that were bright and true. GREEN!!! RED!!!! PURPLE!!!! caps because they're bang-on Crayola pure! I also find puddin' stones which work their way down into Michigan from the glaciers as they moved down from Canada.

My neighbours think I'm pretty weird since a lot of my walk is me looking down at the Road and quick-scanning for these, unique colours, fossils, etc. I have times during my 4-mile walk that I have to unload my stones into plastic grocery bags and stash them in the weeds along the road and go back for them with the car. I mean... 2-3 bags with about 10 pounds of stones in each can get heavy ;) I'm looking forward to the day (soon!) when I'll start sorting out the 30+ cat litter boxes of what I've gathered over the past 25 years and start building things (light houses/ bird houses/ hobbit houses, etc ;).

So how about you? Have you got anything you like to do to keep you going? DO TELL!

Gandalf, the hobbits, the Elves and I are nearing the end of our journey to the Grey Havens. The land is rising as we approach the Tower Hills

Greetings Fellow Travellers!
I hope your adventures are action-packed and inspiring! ;) Raking for me really fills me with enthusiasm *kaff* But we do what we gotta... right?

How are you coming along? What do you do to keep you on your Quest? I love it when we can do things for mileage that we enjoy and not out of necessity. Have you got anything you're looking forward to that will get you moving along? There's a huge flea market going on starting tomorrow that covers about 5 acres of a farmer's field. It takes about 2 hours just to walk up and down the rows and rows of booths filled with everything from antiques to household items to Amish baked goods to crafts... if you're looking for something, you'll find it here. It is called the Amish Market since it's held on one on the local family's farms and they have an auction of their quilts, woodwork furniture, livestock, etc... but I just have fun hunting for tools and collectibles.

The hobbits and I are still travelling to the Grey Havens with an incredible collection of Elves. It's a long trek and the Tower Hills are amazing; but it's not a very happy trip.
