History is written by the victors, you know [In reply to] Can't Post

Someday I hope to read LOTR from the point of view of the much-maligned Sackville-Baggins. I'm sure all they'd have a different story to tell. And Lotho was just a businessman, after all, a victim of a merger & acquisition that wiped him out as a shareholder. He's the true victim of LOTR.

'Ho la! You up there, you dunghill rat!' [In reply to] Can't Post

Reading this thread - am I the only one sick enough to wonder about the meaning of the Tower warden's name? Or is everybody else just too polite to write this down?

While Tolkien probably did know the vulgar term, I am pretty sure this was not what he had in mind - just an unhappy coincidence.

That never occurred to me [In reply to] Can't Post

But I have wondered whether the good professor had any urgent advice from an editor that led him to change Celeborn's name from Teleporno.

I thought "Teleporno" post-dated the publication of LOTR. No? // [In reply to] Can't Post

Treachery, treachery I fear; treachery of that miserable creature.

But so it must be. Let us remember that a traitor may betray himself and do good that he does not intend.
