The new Tolkien biopic is rather unimaginatively titled "Tolkien". What other titles for the film did the studio consider?

This minimalist titling of books and movies is so heavily enforced these days that I yearn for the First Age when instead of calling a book "The South" we had "Gone with the Wind," or instead of a play about a troubled woman called "Woman" we had "Streetcar Named Desire." Those are titles that stick with you. (I will acknowledge the recent "The Man Who Invented Christmas" was a step in the right direction.) I won't pretend that I am the Feanor of title creation, but I would still brainstorm until I found something better than "Tolkien": "Master of Middle-earth" "Godfather of the Hobbits" "Author of the Century" (yes, I know, it's taken) "The Real Lord of the Rings" (and yes, fans and purists could fight over that) "From Oxford to Rivendell" "The Genius on the Thames" etc

I'm related to "The King" Clark Gable. In fact, his mother is buried near my house. She died when he was so little that he had no memory of her.

..,because why sell only one set of tickets? Since Tolkien lived an outwardly conventional life while wild things went on in his head, it was going to be called “Tolkien Heads” Tolkien Heads: Speaking In Tongues - covered JRRT’s discovery of languages Tolkien Heads: Little Creatures - the Hobbits, of course ...and then they got stuck - Tolkien Heads:Naked got a quizzical eyebrow from the Tolkien Foundation. Tolkien Heads: Remain in Light was deemed “political”; and Tolkien Heads:Stop Making Sense the same. “Tolkien Heads: More Songs About Buildings and Food” could be justified, was thought likely to appeal only to hard-core fans, and then only once in a lifetime....

And Rose drew him in, and set him on the harpsichord bench, and put little Wilhelm Friedemann upon his lap. He began composing a fugue. 'Well, I'm Bach,' he said.

Presumably the episode could also reveal Tolkien’s “previously unknown” role as an amateur detective (codename “Hemlock”) who plays s key role in catching a Psycho killer? I’m relieved that “Burning Down The Hole” turns out to be about this period of Tolkien’s life. I was initially worried that it would be about the unpleasant infection Tolkien contracted in his army days. (The one that, fortunately, turned out to be a regular ear-ache, and so not really a source of much drama at all unless it was greatly sensationalised).

...the whole multi-movie 'Tolkien Heads' idea turned out to be a Road to Nowhere. It would have had an interesting soundtrack, though.

I like how Tom Shippey didn't bother with subtlety in his Tolkien biography.

In a later work, Tom Shippey wrote that he deliberately left out the article before "Author" in order to let the reader decide whether Tolkien was "the author of the century" or "an author of the century" (i.e., a characteristically 20th C. writer as opposed to the irrelevant antiquarian he is sometimes described as).
Treachery, treachery I fear; treachery of that miserable creature. But so it must be. Let us remember that a traitor may betray himself and do good that he does not intend. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Discuss Tolkien's life and works in the Reading Room! +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= How to find old Reading Room discussions.
