What is this new devilry?

I have noticed that my recent posts seem to have weird formatting. An example is here. When I wrote it, it looked fine, with spaces after full stops, and my examples on new lines, like a list. After I posted it, it looked totally different, so I edited it back to how it should look. When I went back later I saw it had reverted to the horrid formatting, with everything all squashy. Can the admins cast any light please? Edited to add: I didn't need to provide a link to a sample post, because exactly the same thing has happened to this one!

I seem to have to double space between paragraphs to get single spaced lines lately. Don't know if it's a boards or browser or funky update thing. I'm using Firefox, what are you using?

Ok, my piratey alter-ego posted using IE and looked fine, so...most likely a Firefox thing. My Firefox updated a couple of days ago, maybe something went a little wonky then. I'll dig around and see if there's a setting to change somewhere.

Of a tweet I saw recently that made reference to a word in German for the moment when you're about to show someone a thing/process that isn't working and it suddenly starts working that instant. A word I could use just about every other day! https://twitter.com/.../1081315047492722688

No luck on finding a browser setting to change. After trying things a bunch of different ways, this is what I found out. It works fine if you write in another program, like Notepad, and cut and paste your text in. It also works fine if you type (or edit your spacing) in Basic Editor and switch back over to Advanced. But if you type new text in Advanced, you have the spacing problem. I can't figure out why, but when typing a new post in FF, it simply ignores the first Enter. It doesn't record a line break. So you have to hit Enter twice to get a line break to show up in the code. You can see what it's going to do if you hit Preview. Even though it will still look normal in the post box, it will be smushed together in the preview. Except, and how weird is this? If you hit the spacebar once at the end of the sentence before you hit Enter to start the new paragraph. Then it recognizes the spacing and behaves normally. So...learn to put an extra space before your line breaks and all will be well. As board quirks go, this is one of the odder ones.

If I edit twice, it often stays. I thought it was just me, since it has happened (long) before.

It's nice to have, if not a solution, at least an easy workaround. I shall also enjoy having a little elbow room in my posts!

the solution I found earlier in the thread? It does line breaks normally if you put a space at the end of the sentence before you hit Enter to start your new paragraph. Then you don't have to go back and edit!

I was just trying to say that it's been going on for months for me now, I assume because of a change in Firefox, though of course that doesn't explain why it's only happened to others recently. I am trying to implement the change you sleuthed out, but i keep forgetting: new-old editing habits die hard. (I remembered to here, and EUREKA! It works. Oh, the virtues of the humbe Space bar.)

With my TIME posts, I have a file I put together that I cut and paste from. I use my OLD computer with Vista and post through Explorer. I have some extra lines in my TIME chapter titles, but gave up messing with those. I don't have very many problems (other than that) and my formatting/edition holds up really well. When I post on the homepage, I have to switch over to FireFox or I can't even get into the site. HOWEVER, when I post via my laptop (when my oldie catches a cold), I do have all of the issues talked about here. I do the switchy back and forth between editors to cleanup... but I'll definitely try the extra space at the end of the sentences/paragraphs when I'm on the laptop. When I copy something posted on TORn and paste it into my word file, it has the spacing issues. I'm just adding this twist in case it drops another crumb on the path. I'm hanging onto my old setup as long as I can just because it's so much more compatible with TORn's setup. Thanks for the sleuthing, matey! :D

I just thunk of this... the only time I have problems with single-spacing turning into double-spacing is when the line is centered (i.e. poems, chapter titles, etc.) Those always become double-spaced in posts even when it's formatted in work as single-spaced in my files. Normally-formatted text stays single-spaced.
