MATCHSTALK MAN

by Mark Underwood

SYNOPSIS

Set in real time Matchstalk Man follows the disintegrating lives of four of society’s outcasts and their dreams for a better life as they play desperate games to discover which one of them has taken the £2 million; the booty from a sale of an accidentally discovered crack mountain; the only escape from their dismal lives.

Located in a derelict warehouse at the back of a devastated town which they trashed the night before they hold each other hostage determined to discover the truth and the cash.

Led by a psychotic pyromaniac who has just torched the local town centre, his “bimbo” girlfriend, a young man with an advanced death wish and a nymphomaniac hard woman, the story veers with Ortonesque energy through black humour and blacker pain, the characters are endearing and funny and not really that different from you and me.

As Greeg, the underworld King hunts them down can Jack, Terry, Pansy and Georgie stop arguing and accusing one another long enough to figure out where the money really is? If only Jack could stop setting fire to stuff, if only they could stop getting into domestics long enough to focus on the problem, maybe they’ll live. If only they’d give up the money and run. Not likely. One of them must have it. With out the cash where is the dream? It is a quest for hidden truths that can only result in heartbreak. is, then maybe they’d stand a better chance of staying alive before Greeg gets to them.

The clock is ticking.

The reality world of Matchstalk Man is gritty and real, yet with 4 main characters who’s lives are not far short of those we relate to, through their own individual short comings every character is allowed to have a sense of humour and humanity, mixed in with a dash of paranoia and ill intent, the world itself is allowed to conspire to emphasize this comedy and paranoia and in turn the central theme of the film: TRUST NO ONE.

THE SCREENPLAY

Matchstalk Man received its World premiere at the Bedlam Theatre Edinburgh during the 1998 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and its London debut in the West End in May 1999 to enthused crowds and has been produced independently in America in 2000 before being commissioned as a screenplay in May 2003.
