Professor Tolkien's b'day is coming up! Can't Post

Born on January 3, 1892, J.R.R. Tolkien would be 127 years old this year!

I thought it would be fun to have a bit of a party for him here on Main to celebrate. Let's have one big long thread with all sorts of games, fanfics, art, drabbles, haiku... all posted together. Whatever floats your elven boat down the Anduin :D

See you on Thursday the 3rd!

Happy Birthday, Professor Tolkien! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for getting this started, gramma!
Just a quick, heartfelt birthday wish for an amazing man. It's a bit surreal to consider that if Professor Tolkien hadn't come along 127 years ago, we wouldn't have had almost 20 years of camaraderie together here on TORn. It truly boggles the mind!
To "The Professor"! HeartHeart

My Wish on our dear Professor's Birthday [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh beloved Professeur Tolkien,
On this your Birthday I am keen
To thank you for your very birth
That gave us your great Middle-earth!
All your tales of Humans and Elves
And Dwarves and Hobbits fill the shelves
Of my inner world’s Library
Which never can become dreary
For I keep reading them, my sight
Flooded with Eru’s very Light
Of Love and Creativity,
The Source of All Reality
In all the Worlds, and this Power
Brings Love also to my bower,
Making my heart yearn with Estel
Like the heart of Galadriel…
May our Arda of bodies charred
Soon be remade Arda Unmarred,
An Earthly Paradise again
Where kindness and sweetness regain
Dominance among all beings
And there is no need of fightings!
Mortal Men and their Wise Women
Were meant like Beren and Luthien
To fall in love with the High Elves
And them too, fall in love themselves
With the Mortal Human Species,
Choosing to join their Fate of Death.
May Eru’s Plan soon come fulfilled,
Through the Ages of Time’s huge Field,
Which wasn’t possible before:
May some day the bright Aegnor
Reborn, in a new Athrabeth
Marry at last his dear Andreth!

'Is everything sad going to come untrue?'
(Sam, 'The Field of Cormallen', in 'The Return of the King'.)

Happy Birthday, Professor Tolkien! :D [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's to our Good Professor! Many Happy Returns of the Day!

These battered books never leave my side.
I've travelled for years with these familiar friends
Through mountain, marsh, and wood;
Facing terrors and lands unknown;
With cherished companions and lands well-known.

My comfort, my escape, my well-worn world.
The gift of a Wizard with pipe and pen,
who has filled my life with beauty unbound.

[it doesn't rhyme and isn't proper poetry, but there you are...]

Cheers and Happy Birthday, Professor Tolkien. Thank you for bringing me so much joy.

*raises mug of tea* The Professor! [In reply to] Can't Post

What a fun idea for his birthday thread, gramma!

I opened up my "treasure chest" of Tolkien-y tidbits collected through the long years, poked through it, and came across one which I'd quite forgotten about: a tribute to the Professor from his friend, W.H. Auden. I present it here, in its fullness, in honor of the day:

A Short Ode to a Philologist
W. H. Auden

Die Sprache ist die Mutter, nicht die Magd des Gedankens
-- Karl Kraus
(“Speech is the Mother, not the hand-maid, of thoughts”)

Necessity knows no speech: not even
Shakespeare can say
What must be said so well as Frisch's bees convey
Vital instructions by ballet,
Nor do Jack and Jill, like thrushes,
Grow outspoken under May's compulsion.
A scream can be uncontrollable and yawning a rudeness
One has to be excused, but free
Speech is a tautology.

Who means Good-morning reveals he is not
Napoleon or
Napoleon's cook but quite as born, a first author,
Ready in turn to answer for
A story he cannot invent
And must leave to others to tell with what
Prejudice they prefer. Social charmers daren't invite comment
And a chatterbox doesn't: in
Speech, if true, true deeds begin.

If not, there's International Babel,
In which murders
Are a sanitary measure and stockbrokers
Integrity-ridden for sirs
Who think big, where noises abound
For throats to hire whose doom is to compel
Attention: its Void costs money, being flood-lit, wired for sound,
With banner headlines guaranteed
And applause pre-recorded.

But Dame Philology is our Queen still,
Quick to comfort
Truth-loving hearts in their mother-tongue (to report
On the miracles she has wrought
In the U.K., the N.E.D.
Takes fourteen tomes): She suffers no evil,
And a statesman still, so her grace prevent, may keep a treaty,
A poor commoner arrive at
The Proper Name for his cat.

No hero is immortal till he dies
Nor is a tongue,
But a lay of Beowulf's language, too, can be sung,
Ignoble, maybe, to the young,
Having no monsters and no gore
To speak of, yet not without its beauties
For those who have learned to hope: a lot of us are grateful for
What J. R. R. Tolkien has done
As bard to Anglo-Saxon.

Heart

A Birthday Haiku [In reply to] Can't Post

In Honour of J.R.R. Tolkien's Birthday, 2019

Salutations, Sir;
Professor, husband, father;
He's inspired by life.

Builds a world with words
Visions filled his mind with Elves
Men, Wizards and Dwarves

But it's the smallest,
Children of the kindly West,
Hobbits rise from myth

Shake the foundation
Of powers long held by Kings,
Queens and a Dark Lord.

The meek inherits
The Middle-earth War of Rings;
Not knowing the way.

Their Quest is for all.
Kindreds bond in Fellowship;
Meeting friends and foes.

Fate on the knife's edge;
Everything sad comes untrue?Endless Fellowship.

I've made it a Special Thanksgiving Day to J.R.R.T. [In reply to] Can't Post

by deciding to take the day off and go on a One Day Vacation to Middle-earth, via the beautiful songs and other musical themes composed by Howard Shore for the two Trilogies made by Peter Jackson and team, often on poems and other texts by Tolkien himself. Among the number of YouTube videos I used for that happy but also nostalgic purpose, I stumbled upon something that is of course already known by most here on TORn, but was for me a very moving discovery: 'Namarië', sung by the Professor in person!

https://www.youtube.com/...RtMbGkUDTFxKk4eRkj1p
(Sorry for not being able to make it a link... I find the time to come back here only rarely and for brief periods of time, and in between I forget again how to make links!...)
This made my day all the more special: I feel I have been in his very presence, somehow, and received his live greetings in that form... All my gratitude for this too, beloved Professor...

Happy Birthday, Professor! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've not got any poems or songs to share, so instead I'll simply raise a glass in honor of the dear Professor who has shaped my entire world, my writing, and my entire way of thinking. Thank you for the inspiration you've given me on my own journey through Middle-earth. Happy Birthday, and may your memory on this earth never grow old.

"Torment in the dark was the danger that I feared, and it did not hold me back. But I would not have come, had I known the danger of light and joy. Now I have taken my worst wound in this parting, even if I were to go this night straight to the Dark Lord."

Happy Birthday Professor! [In reply to] Can't Post

I haven't nearly the literary talent of all of you who've posted before me, so I will instead raise a toast to the dear Professor, who has given me so much joy and wonder for all these many years, and many thanks for the wonderful friends here on TORn.

*cheers!*

Party time [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for getting this party started gramma. A very happy birthday to the good professor. You have accomplished a million great things, which sparked a billion and chain reacted into a trillion. One of those is the group of friends that have come together here. For that (and the other 999,999,999,999) we are greatly indebted.

Updates of the actors [In reply to] Can't Post

Is there any place here that keeps track of the stars' birthdays and updates on times and places of their public appearances?
