He'll inevitably have to produce UHD version and 3D post-conversions of them. That, in and of itself, would be a longer, more ardous project than making changes to the films themselves.

The Lord of the Rings was shot on good super-35 stock with quite a few perforations, It'd be a shame not to have it scanned and shown in the best possible quality, and set against the biggest of screens.
