Good luck with that - [In reply to] Can't Post

I believe that the Irish records are more patchy than the English ones, but it's always worth a try. The website familysearch.org (the Mormon Genealogical Index) might be of interest.

Even the most basic details [In reply to] Can't Post

hint at stories and dramas of lives long gone. I have particular sympathy for one couple on my father's side in the early 1800s who had 14 children but only 7 of them lived to adulthood. That sort of loss is hard to imagine, now. My paternal grandfather was the youngest of 10 - all boys. There was one girl, but she died when she was 12 - so sad.

I'm going to have to get back into research [In reply to] Can't Post

there, and at Ancestry, probably when I retire! Laugh I know that once I start back into that, it'll become obsessive, but it's always fun to find a few more ancestors.

So much grief [In reply to] Can't Post

They never knew how many, if any, of their children would live to adulthood. Unsure

Even into the 1900s. My dad, one of 13 on a farm, remembered clearly his littlest sister being fine when he left the house one morning, then when he returned later that afternoon the baby was laid out in a casket in the parlor. Unimaginable. Frown

Nothing this year, [In reply to] Can't Post

but part of me is glad. I found a few things I liked and weren't totally unreasonable. But I resisted!

How about this one? It's by Lino Tagliapietra, who is probably the greatest living master of glass. He taught Chihuly. Lino is from Italy, where most of the best glass art is made. He comes from a tradition where future glass artists have to apprentice for years, if not decades.

Lino is at SOFA every year, and this year is no different.

That piece was marked for US$475,000.

That is glass? [In reply to] Can't Post

So delicate! I'll never be able to comprehend how artists like him can create such beauty. It's a gift. Heart

You wouldn't want to live in an earthquake zone and have that on your wall. [In reply to] Can't Post

But that piece is stunning. So evocative.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.
