It was awful. I'm also in agreement about Sanderson. His writing is bland and unfocused.

Like, I tried the Stormlight Archives, or whatever that was, and it literally put me to sleep. Him and Robert Jordan.
"Torment in the dark was the danger that I feared, and it did not hold me back. But I would not have come, had I known the danger of light and joy. Now I have taken my worst wound in this parting, even if I were to go this night straight to the Dark Lord."

Although the double was not of him but of his wife Eilinel: a vision used to lure him into a trap.

And of course dismemberment is known in Tolkien's works.

Thror comes to mind first for me, but a number of other examples will occur to many readers.

Thror was hacked up and thrown to the crows, as you say. But I can't think of any other instances of dismemberment of a dead captive in Tolkien, but maybe others can. Of course in the war-time violence of medieval battles by sword and axe, limbs will fly. And in the stories, fingers and hands are lopped off with barely a wince, but that's not the same thing as
" 'Indeed,' said Goodgulf, glaring at Orlon, and if looks could maim, the old elf would have left the embassy in a briefcase.

but from my recollection few of the authors managed to really imitate both style and spirit of the original works. Among those I thought more or less suceeded, I reread one of those recently. Being 10 years or so older, I still thought it well written but decided the style was matching the LotR style less actually than I had been thinking.

Did he successfully make it back to Angband? It seems unlikely. Did he think his errand was a suicide mission?

But nobody expected Gwindor's onslaught, and Tolkien seems to consider it ill-advised. Even if Morgoth's purpose was to lure Fingon's army out, I suppose the murderous heralds fully expected to survive.

Why? What's the comparison? The Mouth of Sauron came with an actual offer, even if untrustworthy - it is like an enemy ambassador being interviewed in the main stream media; the heralds who murdered Gelmir were more like an execution broadcast on YouTube to provoke public opinion. And what ever happened to the Mouth of Sauron?

But in both cases an amassed army of good peoples is greeted outside the gates of the enemy by an emissary who attempts to manipulate them using a prisoner. And I wondered if the Mouth of Sauron, thinking about how things had gone for his predecessor, feared for his own life. Just getting a cold stare from Aragorn unnerves him.
