Sword vs Spear Can't Post

Nice video on the two - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afqhBODc_8U

Of course, spears were quite often employed in ranks and or cavalry but things would break down to one on one.

Both weapons were used by all sides in Middle Earth.

That's a fair assessment... [In reply to] Can't Post

...of what they watched, which was fighters with little spear experience, both wielding them and fighting against them.

I've had enough spear training to consider myself marginally competent with them, and a lot more experience fighting against them. Range is the key; at long range the spearman is safe and effective, at short range he is in peril and ineffective. So it's all about getting in close. How to do that?

If you can grab the spearshaft (preferably right behind the head) you have the advantage of leverage to keep the pointy end out of your guts as you charge in close. I used that technique to win more fights than I lost with my dagger against my opponent's spear.

With sword and shield against spear, I had some luck inviting a thrust to my head, which I would block by raising my shield high, pushing the spear point above me, and looking under my shield for my opponent's feet. Keep the spear high, run up the shaft, and swing for the space above his feet.

Those tricks don't work every time; in martial arts, nothing does. But they were pretty effective for me.

Anyway, fun video. Thanks for sharing.

Right, the best warrior was laid low by a small error.... [In reply to] Can't Post

No take backs.....a spear in your guts just ruins your day...a very long painful day or two.

Never bring a spear to a sword fight...... unless [In reply to] Can't Post

You get to throw it first..... or get the first thrust.....

Assuming both contestants are competent with their chosen weapon... I go for the spear man..
