***Birthday Game: Maddening Letter Count
|

This is a letter-search game of an 11-word phrase from Professor Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (see below). There are 3 clues in each of these 6 lines from LotR for finding letters to complete the final phrase below. Most of the letters are used multiple times. So each word is identified as a GROUP to help you know in which word the letters are used. For example, in phrase #6 – 1st clue. Count over to the 7th word in the line and count the letters in that word to the 4th letter... which is "V". You know that letter will be used in GROUP 6. Where it's placed in that GROUP is up to you. Maddening yet? ;) My goal is to challenge you, but not take too much time. The final phrase answer is hidden in highlight (also) below. NO PEEKING! Have fun! 1. "There they saw close beside them a great rubble-heap; and suddenly they were aware of two small figures lying on it at their ease." 5th word; 1st letter.......10th word; 4th letter.......19th word; 5th letter group 1; 9; 10.................group 4; 10.....................group 3; 9; 10 2. "There are queer folk about. Though I say it as shouldn't, you may think" 8th word; 2nd letter.......12th word; 1st letter.......14th word; 3rd letter group 2; 4; 6; 8; 9...........group 9............................group 1; 9 3. "It's a hobbit by the size of it; but all dressed up queer." 3rd word; 1st letter.......11th word; 1st letter.......6th word; 4th letter group 4; 6; 7; 9..............group 2; 3; 4; 9; 11..........group 4; 6; 7; 8; 10 4. "All your long life we have been friends, and you owe me something." 8th word; 5th letter.......11th word; 1st letter.......3rd word; 1st letter group 2; 4; 11.................group 1; 3; 5...................group 1 5. ”You speak evil of that which is fair beyond the reach of your thought, and only little wit can excuse you." 14th word; 1st letter.......2nd word; 1st letter.......8th word; 1st letter group 5; 7; 9; 10..............group 8; 10....................group 3 6. "Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!" 7th word; 4th letter.......3rd word; 4th letter.......Take a guess!!!!! ;) group 6...........................group 8; 10....................group 11
WORD GROUPS 1 through 11 for placing letters. 'Bilbo and Frodo happened to have the same birthday, September 22nd.' Expanded: "Bilbo and Frodo happened to have the same birthday, September 22nd. 'You had better come and live here, Frodo my lad,' said Bilbo one day; 'and then we can celebrate our birthday-parties comfortably together.'" From: A Long-Expected Party: pg 43 I

Thanks for the game, Gramma! I messed up on a few letters, but once I got them all in groups, I was able to guess at most of the sentence, with a little help from the book for confirmation. As Gandalf said, "Absurdly simple, like most riddles when you see the answer."

But, it took a bag of jump-starts, and some strange utterances came from someone's(?) mouth. Very good and clever gramma. Thanks and hugs
