I had originally put together this little quiz to celebrate of Gandalf’s escape from Isengard (Sept. 18). But with a little nudge and a gentle reminder from grammaboodawg I decided to postpone and join the celebration of Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday. Here are twenty exact book quotes from The Lord of the Rings, that hint at or describe a place, thing, or object.
How many can you get? Answers/scores in a few days. Good luck! 1. Slender they looked, but strong, silken to the touch, grey of hue like the elven-cloaks. 2. It was a purely Bywater joke to refer to it as Sharkey’s End. 3. At the beginning there were many leaves covered with Bilbo’s thin wandering hand; but most of it was written in Frodo’s firm flowing script. 4. ‘It comes down out of the Downs and flows south-west through the midst of the Forest to join the Brandywine below Haysend.’ 5. Out of it came a stench, not the sickly odor of decay in the meads of Morgul, but a foul reek, as if filth unnamable were piled and hoarded in the dark within. 6. … it glittered like polished gold overlaid with silver light, and a white stone in it twinkled as if the Even-star had come down to rest upon her hand. 7. ‘Give them this,’ said Gandalf, searching in his pack and drawing out a leathern flask. ‘Just a mouthful each—for all of us. It is very precious.’ 8. Master Everard Took and Miss Malilot Brandybuck got on a table and with bells in their hands began to dance …: a pretty dance, but rather vigorous. 9. Before them lay a long lawn of shining grass, studded with golden elanor that glinted in the sun. 10. ‘Here they have one of the marvels of the Northern World … ‘ 11. Turning westward they came at length to a door in the rearward wall of the sixth circle. 12. ‘ … and it was set upon a hill, and upon it the King of the Mountains swore allegiance to him in the beginning of the realm of Gondor.’ 13. [it] … was lit by a wide shaft high in the further eastern wall; it slanted upward and, far above, a small square patch of blue sky could be seen. 14. ‘From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak it climbed, ascending in unbroken spiral in many thousand steps, … ‘ 15. In it were no tables, but a bright fire was burning in a great hearth between the carven pillars upon either side. 16. Then with searing suddenness there came a great red flash. Far beyond the eastern mountains it leapt into the sky and splashed the lowering clouds with crimson. 17. There was a tall mountain in the midst of the land, … and from its summit the farsighted could descry the White Tower of the Haven of the Eldar in Eressëa. 18. ‘Nay, lady,’ said he, ‘I am not astray; for I have walked in this land ere you were born to grace it. There is a road out of this valley, and that road I shall take.’ 19. Then slowly on the surface, where the wizard/s hands had passed, faint lines appeared, like slender veins of silver running in the stone. 20. ‘… and in the midst, set upon a green terrace, there stands a loft a great hall of Men. And it seems to my eyes that it is thatched with gold.’
‘. . . the rule of no realm is mine . . . But all worthy things that are in peril . . . those are my care. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?' Gandalf to Denethor

Thanks for the game, Brace! I did this from memory; you picked some very memorable lines.
- ?
- New Row
- The Red Book of Westmarch
- Withywindle
- Shelob's Lair?
- Nenya, Galadriel's Ring
- miruvor, precursor to Redbull
- [argh! I think it's something like "Sprinkle-Ring"]
- The lawn in Caras Galadhon beneath the royal tree? Or Cerin Amroth? (I'm like Gollum, getting in 2 guesses when I only get 1.)
- ?
- Rath Dinen in Minas Tirith?
- [argh! I go all piratey when I can't remember. It's the stone in Lamedon where Aragorn meets the ungrateful Dead.]
- Balin's tomb in the Chamber of Mazarbul
- Durin's Stair in Moria, used by Gandalf and the Balrog
- Hmmm--Hall of Fire in Rivendell?
- Mt Doom
- Numenor; Meneltarma
- The Paths of the Dead
- The Hollin Gate of Moria
- Legolas describing Edoras

I'm taking a flying shot at many of these. So familiar, but the ol' brain just doesn't fire on all cylinders anymore ;) THANKS FOR THE GREAT GAME! 1. Slender they looked, but strong, silken to the touch, grey of hue like the elven-cloaks. The elven rope Sam got in Lothlorien (hithlain) 2. It was a purely Bywater joke to refer to it as Sharkey’s End. Bagshot Row's pet name after Saruman was killed there by Wormtongue. 3. At the beginning there were many leaves covered with Bilbo’s thin wandering hand; but most of it was written in Frodo’s firm flowing script. The Red Book of Westmarch where Bilbo and Frodo wrote about their adventures... later given to Sam. 4. ‘It comes down out of the Downs and flows south-west through the midst of the Forest to join the Brandywine below Haysend.’ Withywindle River? 5. Out of it came a stench, not the sickly odor of decay in the meads of Morgul, but a foul reek, as if filth unnamable were piled and hoarded in the dark within. Shelob's lair 6. … it glittered like polished gold overlaid with silver light, and a white stone in it twinkled as if the Even-star had come down to rest upon her hand. Nenya 7. ‘Give them this,’ said Gandalf, searching in his pack and drawing out a leathern flask. ‘Just a mouthful each—for all of us. It is very precious.’ Miruvor 8. Master Everard Took and Miss Malilot Brandybuck got on a table and with bells in their hands began to dance …: a pretty dance, but rather vigorous. The Springle Dance 9. Before them lay a long lawn of shining grass, studded with golden elanor that glinted in the sun. Lothlorien by Anduin 10. ‘Here they have one of the marvels of the Northern World … ‘ uhhhhhh...... 11. Turning westward they came at length to a door in the rearward wall of the sixth circle. Minas Tirith Tomb 12. ‘ … and it was set upon a hill, and upon it the King of the Mountains swore allegiance to him in the beginning of the realm of Gondor.’ The Black Stone 13. [it] … was lit by a wide shaft high in the further eastern wall; it slanted upward and, far above, a small square patch of blue sky could be seen. Moria chamber 14. ‘From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak it climbed, ascending in unbroken spiral in many thousand steps, … ‘ Stairs of Cirith Ungol 15. In it were no tables, but a bright fire was burning in a great hearth between the carven pillars upon either side. Inside Meduseld 16. Then with searing suddenness there came a great red flash. Far beyond the eastern mountains it leapt into the sky and splashed the lowering clouds with crimson. The signal from Minas Morgul 17. There was a tall mountain in the midst of the land, … and from its summit the farsighted could descry the White Tower of the Haven of the Eldar in Eressëa. Frodo on the seat of Amon Hen? 18. ‘Nay, lady,’ said he, ‘I am not astray; for I have walked in this land ere you were born to grace it. There is a road out of this valley, and that road I shall take.’ Aragorn talking to Eowyn before leaving for the Paths of the Dead 19. Then slowly on the surface, where the wizard/s hands had passed, faint lines appeared, like slender veins of silver running in the stone. The hidden doors outside Moria 20. ‘… and in the midst, set upon a green terrace, there stands a loft a great hall of Men. And it seems to my eyes that it is thatched with gold.’ Meduseld in Rohan

Heh, to the book, for a couple of these! This was fun, BG, thanks! 1. Sam's Lorien ropes. 2. New Row (the former Bagshot Row). 3. Red Book of Westmarch. I love that Bilbo's handwriting is described as "wandering". 4. The Withywindle. 5. Torech Ungol - Shelob's Lair. 6. The gem Arwen gave Frodo. 7. Miruvor, the Cordial of Imladris. 8. The Springle-ring. 9. Tricksy! I thought this was Cerin Amroth, but it didn't seem quite right, so I did look it up, and it's the spit of land between Anduin and Silverlode. 10. The Glittering Caves of Aglarond. 11. The top tier of Minas Tirith. 12. The Stone of Erech. 13. The Chamber of Mazarbul. 14. Zirak-zigil, also known as Carathras. 15. The Hall of Fire. 16. The assault is begun, with the signal from Mt. Doom. 17. Meneltarma in Numenor. (I must admit, I had to look up its name!) 18. The Paths of the Dead. 19. The Doors of Durin. 20. Meduseld.
