***Birthday Quiz: Find the Place Can't Post

Happy Birthday to Bilbo and Frodo!

Below are ten places or features in Middle-earth; Bilbo and/or Frodo visited eight of them. Your task is to figure out what each is, from the riddle provided. For clues, three letters are already given. Try this closed-book!

1. Beware when you cross; this mountain is cruel!
_ _ R _ _ H _ A _

2. In the midst of its bridge, was left a green jewel.
M _ _ H _ _ T _ _ _

3. Lillies afloat, it winds through the Old Forest.
_ _ _ _ Y _ _ N _ _ E

4. For singing and stories, or simply more rest!
_ I _ _ N _ _ L _

5. Darkness and stillness, you dare make no sound...
_ _ _ Z _ D - D _ _

6. In a long-forgot hallow, a white tree was found!
M _ _ _ O _ L _ _ _

7. Listen: do you hear a fair maiden sing?
_ _ M _ O _ E _

8. A throne and a sceptre, the signs of the King.
A _ _ _ M _ _ A _

9. Bright sky shines above, yet but stars will you see...
_ _ R _ _ R _ _ R _

10. "All's well as ends Better", near the new mallorn tree!
" _ _ A _ _ E _ _ _ N _ "

Have fun!
Smile

Some answers [In reply to] Can't Post

Fun quiz, Dernwyn--thanks!
  1. Caradhras. I think any mountain has a right to be cruel if Dwarves spent centuries hollowing it out. Wink
  2. Mitheithel, which sounds like a lisper trying to say "Miss Eisel." Maybe if the Noldor weren't so careless about leaving their gems around in Middle-earth, there would have been fewer wars over them.
  3. Withywindle
  4. Rivendell, the most famous B&B in M-E, and at reasonable rates too, especially off-season.
  5. Khazad-dum. It's okay to fly there if your wings make no sound.
  6. Mindolliun. If the Dunedain weren't so careless about leaving their trees around--never mind.
  7. Nimrodel. And I think her song came from a solar-powered iPod rather than magic, but I already brought up the balrog wings thing, so I'll stop there.
  8. Annuminas
  9. Mirrormere, left off most guide books so there's no souvenir stand or marker nearby, so travel with a Dwarf to find it. Basically the forerunner to planetariums.
  10. Sharkey's End (and good riddance to that dratted old wizard!)

Thanks again!

Like the rhyming clues! [In reply to] Can't Post

Unfortunately, like an eejit, I read the answer post as I was in 'browse mode' and not thinking. Nice quiz, though!
