***Birthday Quiz: Fellowship Math!
|

|
A most happy Birthday, September 22nd, to Frodo and Bilbo! This is a different kind of quiz - it's both a scavenger hunt, and a test of your basic Math skills. Below are eight clues, all from Return of the King. Find the number they refer to, do the indicated math, and you will end up with a special number. 1. Start with the number of Eagles who set out to rescue Frodo and Sam. 2. Add the number of Nazgūl which Pippin sees as they pursue Faramir and his men across the Pelennor. 3. Multiply by the number of inches which Sam says Merry and Pippin are taller than they ought to be. 4. Divide by the number of Shirriffs who accompany the four Hobbits from Frogmorton to Bywater. 5. Multiply by the number of fingers Frodo had when rescued from Mt. Doom. 6. Subtract the number of Beacons. 7. Multiply by Bergil's age in years. 8. Add the number of Hobbits killed in the Battle of Bywater. Now: you should have the age a certain character turns on a special birthday. Who is he, where was this birthday celebrated, and when? Have fun! Remember, no answers in the subject line!

Could I ask a question before starting the scavenge?

1. Could be two OR three, as Gwaihir led the hunt (or was first to see them) and should be considered a part of the rescue. But then physically just two Eagles carried Frodo & Sam. *a hint?* "It's a tough trek as starts off on the wrong foot!"

Whether you consider it the number of Eagles flying out to them, or the actual rescuers. I'll re-word that slightly, to make it clearer. Thanks, BG!

3+5=8 x3=24 ÷12=2x9 =18-7 =11x10 =111+19 =130 Soo, the birthday is Bilbos, and he equals the Old Took this day. Although not recorded textually (I think) it can be reasoned that the party took place at Rivendell, Sept. 22, T.A. 3020. This was an interesting search. Thanks for the fun quiz dernwyn..

It could be called 'gross mathematics' The game is to reach the number 144 (being Frodo and Bilbo's combined age, also a quantity known as 'one gross' which is Bilbo's intended or accidental stab at the S-B's). A total of 144 must be reached by any sequence of arithmetic, using only numbers of things mentioned in the Tolkien's texts. I've found one solution, which I'll give as an example. But I bet there are many others. The more entertaining or preposterous the source of the numbers the better, I think. Here's mine: (A)The number of things '...brought from the foundered land/ Over the flowing sea' (7+7+1 = 15) multiplied by (B) The number of Rings for 'mortal men, doomed to die' (9) (C) Then add the number of members of the Fellowship of the Ring (9) Gives: (15 x 9) + 9 = 144

(# of tribes of High Elves in Valinor) x (# of houses of the Edain in Beleriand) x (# of Finwe's sons) x (# of Silmarils), and add that to the product of (# of Feanor's sons) x (# of Nazgul).

Actually... this one was VERY FUN! Fun hunt and fun math! Great Game, dernwyn. THANKS! 1. Start with the number of Eagles who set out to rescue Frodo and Sam. 3 2. Add the number of Nazgūl which Pippin sees as they pursue Faramir and his men across the Pelennor. 5 +3=8 3. Multiply by the number of inches which Sam says Merry and Pippin are taller than they ought to be. 3x8=24 4. Divide by the number of Shirriffs who accompany the four Hobbits from Frogmorton to Bywater. 12:24=2 5. Multiply by the number of fingers Frodo had when rescued from Mt. Doom. 9x2=18 6. Subtract the number of Beacons. 7-18=11 7. Multiply by Bergil's age in years. 10 x11=110 8. Add the number of Hobbits killed in the Battle of Bywater. 19 +110=129 Now: you should have the age a certain character turns on a special birthday. Who is he, where was this birthday celebrated, and when? Bilbo turned 129yo on September 22, 3019 the day after the hobbits returned to Rivendell from the War and one year after Frodo, Sam and Pippin left Bag End for Crickhollow.

I never was any good at multiplying 10 x 11 Maybe I thought 130 was a better # than 129???

"New math", maybe? But thank you for the chuckle! (Or, as my dad, the actuary, liked to say: there are three kinds of actuaries, those who can count, and those who can't.)

The nice thing about that number

is that it has so many factors, which allow it to be approached from many directions. How about: [(height of the hidden entrance to Erebor in feet) + (number of Trolls turned to stone by Gandalf) + (number of trees on the Doors of Durin)] x (number of Rings for the Dwarf-lords) x (number of famous Elvish swords taken from the Troll-hoard) +(number of Dwarves who fell on Bilbo's door-mat when he pulled open the door). "Gross mathematics", indeed!
