Asking for tech support re: board appearance, posting, PMing... Can't Post

Hi,

I'm hoping someone might help me solve some mysterious problems. They occurred after my motherboard broke and had to be replaced, but that may just be a coincidence. Ever since then TORn has been "weird" to me, while all other sites I visit seem to function normally. Most of these issues you can see from these screenshots:

There are only "broken image" symbols where icons, users' avatars or other images should be.

When trying to make a post or reply to a PM I cannot use any formatting - emoticons don't show, text editing options are a mess, etc. I also have to put two empty lines between paragraphs to get one empty line in the actual post or message, or the paragraphs will run into ech other - but sometimes two "Enters" do produce two empty lines, sometimes I have to repeat them...

What causes the "Connection is not secure" warning and other issues, and what could be done about them? I have understood that the connection in question has nothing to do with my Internet connection.
Please help. I'm using Firefox (it's up to date) and tried Microsoft Edge, but has the same problems.

(Apologies that the pics seem so large. I lost my image resizer with the motherboard and must go find a new one.)

[*Unsure* emoticon here] :(

I am no expert... [In reply to] Can't Post

So these are suggestions of the very basic variety to start with. If you've already tried them, we'll have to get someone more techy involved. I use Firefox as well and have not been having any issues.

1. Clear cookies and cache. This is the "turn it off and back on again" of websites. Sometimes clearing those out will eliminate problems.
2. The secure connection issue, as I understand it, has to do with certificate updates and is not actually a warning of anything being wrong. Mine says it is insecure too and if I go to the More Information "Security" tab on, it tells me that the problem is that TORN doesn't encrypt data. I just ignore it. If you are getting pop-up warnings there is probably a way to turn them off.
3. Also on the More Information window, go to the "Media" tab. There is a little check box that blocks images. Make sure it's unchecked.

Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

Clearing the cookies and cache seems to have helped! At least for now - one strange thing is that while the problems persisted 95% of the times I came here, a few random times everything seemed OK, all icons were visible, etc. I have no idea how that can be when all settings, cookies, etc. remained the same, before now.

I noticed that if the board's address begins with "newboards.theonering.net" and I log in, the site does not remember my password and I have to type it, but icons etc. are visible as normal.
But if the address begins with "https://newboards" the site remembers my password, but icons and images go wonky again. Crazy So as long as I log in the "unsafe" way - supposing that does not compromise my password etc. - everything should be OK....Shocked It's weird in itself because I recall that before I always had that https// there, and had no problems.

But at least now it seems that the problem was solved. Thank you very much! SmileSmileSmile

P.S. After clicking "Preview Post": Now I see that the empty lines = Enters I put after the little sections of this post have disappeared again, so I have to put in two empty Enters to get one empty line. Something is still slightly off, but as long as that's all I'm happy.

Not quite solved after all... :( [In reply to] Can't Post

...As that "https://" that I mentioned in my last post keeps coming back by itself. If I remove it from the address line and hit Enter - or try to open "Log In" in another tab - it comes back time and again, and brings back all those problems with it. :(

While typing this I cannot see the icons or the emoticons, and the text formatting is a mess again. If I hover the cursor above the text formatting line I can pick up things, like "Image" to add one, but it's slow.

It seems to me that this depends on some setting somewhere that is wrong. Would anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of "https://" for good? Do you see that in your address line?

I'm also wondering about the "Parts of this page are not secure (such as images)" warning I see if I click on the little lock on the address line (see second to last pic in my first mail). Why would any images here be "not secure" for my computer when they apparently are safe to everyone else? It makes no sense. Then again I have no problems anywhere else, only on TORn. (And no, I don't get pop-up warnings.)

In the "Media" tab that you mentioned, the "Block images" is not checked.

OK, I don't understand anything anymore...! [In reply to] Can't Post

Just now, the second I posted that last lamentation, all icons and avatars and formatting options came back! Shocked And the "https://" disappeared from the address line. So it really is behind all this, and keeps coming and going randomly.

Now if only there was a way to make it go away permanently. It's going to be a problem if I always have to post a "test post" to get rid of that thing so I could make an actual post I wanted to make in the first place. Crazy

(Edited to add: As you can see in these posts, sometimes the two Enters actually put two empty lines in between paragraphs, and sometimes just one.)

I'm sorry for causing anyone extra work UnsureFrown but any further hints & advice would be greatly appreciated.

Another thought [In reply to] Can't Post

is to make sure you're using the most recent version of Firefox. Firefox itself sometimes causes problems, so if you can use Chrome, that might be more stable.
Finally, you can bookmark the site with just the https:// and use the bookmark to access the site - that way the http:// won't get in the way.

Thank you - it works! :) [In reply to] Can't Post

I have the most recent version of Firefox. But it was your bookmarking idea that solved my issues! Smile It just went the other way 'round - the https:// was causing problems, the http:// was just fine - and I was struggling to get rid of that 's' that kept coming back no matter what, and making the board so difficult to use.

But now I managed to bookmark the "Log In" page in its functional form - http:// - and everything looks like it did before. I have gone back and forth a few times, closing and opening subforums in tabs, logged out and back in. It seems stable. Now I can access the site via the bookmark, as you suggest, and hopefully have no further problems. I'm surprised that the solution was so simple...!

Thank you so much! SmileSmileSmile

The problem might be a conflict with security software. [In reply to] Can't Post

Now that you have a working bookmark to use, it's less of an urgent issue, but in case the problem rears its head again, here's another avenue to explore.

Since your computer repair, have you added any new or updated security software? That might be where the problem is coming from. See Mozilla's help section on that topic. https://support.mozilla.org/...failed-error-message

Thank you again - I checked the help section [In reply to] Can't Post

After the repair I have just used the usual firewall and antivirus software, the same ones I used to have. It may be that their versions are newer than before. I don't have any of the security programs mentioned in the page you linked, and have not had similar problems with any other site. (And I don't even need the bookmark now, for some reason - the 's' from 'https' is not there anymore.)

I followed this link further on that site: https://support.mozilla.org/...n-is-not-secure-mean but basically it's just saying the following:
"If you encounter a 'Your connection is not secure' error, you should contact the owners of the website, if possible, and inform them of the error. It is recommended that you wait for the website to be fixed before using it. "

I suppose these posts of mine can be seen as a way of having already contacted the owners/administrators of the theonering.net, but I'm sure that A) the problem is on my end, and B) if there was an actual security risk involved when visiting TORn - any error to be fixed - TPTB would have already done something about it. And why would I be in any greater risk than anyone else here? Crazy

I had the board still open in a tab in my browser from the day before yesterday when I could not see icons etc., with that little lock and the red line across it on the address line. I clicked the lock and now the warning has changed somewhat from what can be seen in the last pics of my first post above. Now it's saying this:
Connection is not secure
Logins entered on this page could be compromised.

The website newboards.theonering.net does not support encryption for the page you are viewing. [in my case, the log in page]
Information sent over the Internet without encryption can be seen by other people while it is in transit.

That part DOES sound a bit bad, but if my options are to include the 's' in 'http' and lose usability, or exclude the 's' and possibly compromise the login... If everyone else on TORn is fine with it not being encrypted, it cannot be more "dangerous" to me for some strange reason - and without the 's', the lock has disappeared and taken the warnings with it TongueCrazy - so I suppose I should just forget about them.

(I don't know if everyone else has the 's' on their address line or not, and if it makes any difference to others.)

Thank you for your help, entmaiden and Silverlode! Smile

You might be getting that error [In reply to] Can't Post

because our forum software is older. We opened this "new" forum in 2007 and the security protocols have definitely changed since then! So Firefox might be looking for markers in our message board software that it doesn't have.
Glad you found a solution!
