New Book The Fall of Gondolin Can't Post

I saw this in the news but couldn't find any additional info here. A new book is coming out on Aug 30, and it is on one of my favourite M-e stories: The Fall of Gondolin!

https://www.amazon.ca/...rds=fall+of+gondolin

When I read the description I got excited as I saw that it includes "a minutely observed account of the fall of Gondolin." This made it sound to me like Christopher was giving us a full account of Tuor and the Fall, yay! Then further on in the description I see "Following his presentation of Beren and Lúthien Christopher Tolkien has used the same 'history in sequence' mode in the writing of this edition of The Fall of Gondolin." That leads me to understand that there are no new materials or smoothing over of JRRT's various accounts. So which is it? Anyone have any more details?

I'm sure the illustrations by Alan Lee are probably worth the purchase alone, but I would like to know more about what story is included!

That book cover is gorgeous. :) [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't get Beren and Luthien so I can't comment on how this one is likely to be structured. I'm looking forward to seeing the reviews of TORN members once it's been published!

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Every indication is that there will be no new, previously-unpublished texts [In reply to] Can't Post

As you noted, the format will be like 'Beren and Luthien': it will reprint all the extant texts on Gondolin that have previously been published in History of Middle-earth or Unfinished Tales, with linking commentary by C. Tolkien.

The reference to "a minutely observed account of the fall of Gondolin." sounds to me like the exciting story from the Book of Lost Tales, which is certainly quite detailed, and might well be unknown to many readers who are only familiar with the very abbreviated version in The Silmarillion of 1977.

Thanks for the info [In reply to] Can't Post

I have read the account of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin from Unfinished Tales which I loved (except that it ended too soon!), but haven't tackled the HOME and so don't believe I have read the account of the Fall of Gondolin. Probably worth picking up this new book for me!

It might be worth it just for the illustrations....if they are new ones and not reprints. [In reply to] Can't Post
