Siege Towers, Ladders, Catapults etc Can't Post

I dont remember any siege equipment such as towers, catapults etc ever mentioned in the first ages of ME. So my question is when were these first invented?

The Second Age? [In reply to] Can't Post

I would guess that some of those devices would have been invented during the Second Age, some by Men and some by Orcs. Tolkien actually suggested in his writings that Orcs invented some of the devices of mass destruction that have plagued mankind.

When I read this, which was written in the mid-1930s in the context of a fantasy world where the weapons we actually see in use are swords and bows-and-arrows, I imagine the goblins inventing gunpowder weapons such as bombs, guns, and the like.

"Weapons of mass destruction" has always been a relative phrase. When men armed with spears and bows charged rifles and cannon, as the Africans did in the time when Tolkien's father lived there, were they destroyed en masse? When men armed with single-shot rifles charged machine guns and long-range artillery, as Tolkien's fellow troops did in the Great War, were they destroyed 'at once'?

Leave the atomic bomb out of The Hobbit. Save it for The Lord of the Rings. You knew that The One Ring, invented by Sauron rather than the orcs, is the A-Bomb, right? At least in the eyes of several of Tolkien's less perceptive critics.

Ingenious devices for killing. [In reply to] Can't Post

I believe Tolkien was referring to a wide variety of weapons and other devices, from possibly catapults and trebuchets to machine guns and mustard gas. Squire found the precise quote that I was thinking of. The Uruk-hai under Saruman's command might have learned much from him.
