LOTR Lunar Readalong for the month of S.R. 1419 Wedmath, Book VI Chapter 6 continued: The funeral of King Théoden, followed by the return to Isengard on the journey back to Rivendell Can't Post

This post is a continuation of my last Lunar Readalong post.

What's the LOTR Lunar Readalong all about? See The Lord of the Rings Lunar Readalong project page for more info.

This week's Readalong for the funeral of King Théoden has also been posted to Reddit.

The funeral escort of King Théoden arrived at Edoras almost a week after the full moon, and just a couple of days before the moon's 3rd quarter.

The funeral of King Théoden took place the day after the moon's 3rd quarter, so that evening would have been fairly dark, and there would be no moon for the feast, unless it continued past midnight.

For this year's Readalong schedule, the moon's 3rd quarter will come about a day later, so a broader, waning crescent (but nearly 1/2) moon will rise a little earlier on this date this year.

The day of the funeral, S.R. 1419 Wedmath 10, was also the 1st day of Autumn (Yávië / Iavas) by the Reckoning of Rivendell in T.A. 3019.

It was also a Mersday by Shire Reckoning, which was roughly equivalent to a Saturday in modern times (and also happens to fall on a Saturday in this year's schedule).

A gibbous moon setting before the escort on the westward road to Meduseld. [In reply to] Can't Post

I noticed the moon setting fairly early in the morning on my way to work a couple of days back, which made me realize that the morning of the day the escort arrived at Edoras, a gibbous moon would have been setting before them on the westward road to Meduseld. Maybe the escort even had a view of the moon sinking towards the Golden Hall that morning as they approached.

LOTR Lunar Readalong the week of 1419 Wedmath 14: The guests take leave of King Éomer then come to Helm's Deep. [In reply to] Can't Post

This week's Readalong has been posted.

Today the guests take leave of King Éomer, where we read about Arwen's final farewell to Elrond, and Merry receives the Horn of the Mark from Éomer and Éowyn.

Then they will arrive at Helm's Deep the day after the new moon, where they will rest for a couple of days before setting out to Isengard.

Additional timeline dates from the Reader's Companion [In reply to] Can't Post

By the way, the Reader's Companion says that according to Tolkien's Scheme, Gimli showed Legolas the Glittering Caves the day after they returned to Helm's Deep (Wedmath 19). The Company will rest another day, then depart on Wedmath 21st.

LOTR Lunar Readalong for 1419 Wedmath 22: They come to Isengard, then take leave of the King of the West at sunset. [In reply to] Can't Post

This week's Readalong has been posted.

Today Aragorn reclaims the Keys of Orthanc, and Treebeard tells them the part the Ents played in the War of the Ring.

When they take leave of the King of the West at sunset, there also would have been a broad, waxing crescent moon out, just a couple of days from its first quarter.

Wedmath 22 is a "Trewsday" (a.k.a. Trees Day) [In reply to] Can't Post

By the way, I noticed that the day Treebeard welcomes King Elessar to "the Treegarth of Orthanc", S.R. 1419 Wedmath 22, is also a "Trewsday" by Shire Reckoning (a.k.a. Trees Day).

LOTR Lunar Readalong the week of 1419 Wedmath 28: They overtake Saruman, then ride towards the Swanfleet river and the old ford. [In reply to] Can't Post

This week's Readalong has been posted, where the remaining travelers continue north towards the Swanfleet river and the old ford, overtaking Saruman on the way.

As the Reader's Companion points out, "September came in with golden days and silver nights" could be a reference to the fact that there was a full moon before dawn on the 1st of "September" (Halimath) in T.A. 3019.

This year's full moons appear to be slipping further behind schedule, but the new moons appear to be falling back on-schedule.

Overtaking Saruman at sundown on Wedmath 28 [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't realize that yesterday's scene with Saruman took place at sundown, but by chance I didn't have time to do the reading until I got home from work at sundown :)

There was an awesome looking gibbous moon rising through some hazy clouds at that time too!
