I got lost quite quickly: I couldn't find Melian, Thingol, or Feanor in your list, but those are three of the characters I know best. What is Shelob doing in there? Why are the Valar excluded from the casting list? As far as I can tell, the Silmarillion from the Rebellion of the Noldor to the Rising of the Sun is three chapters, about 25 pages. And that's an entire season, for a 250 page book (adapting the First Age only). Who is writing all these outlines/scripts, and what are their ideas about marketing this project? I know this is a fan effort, but is there a sense of perspective or reality here? Then I tried to check out some of the choices on IMDB, to see if I could understand the logic of their casting for a script I haven't read. Starting with Jessica Brown Findlay, the chosen Luthien Tinuviel, I found this unfortunate note in her actor's bio: "Trained as a dancer but switched to acting after bungled ankle surgery ended her dancing career." Maybe another actor? Luthien is defined by her dancing. Then I realized you did give a link to a video that might explain it all. I opened that up and found a 2-1/4 hour tape that, as far as I can tell, is two "hosts" reviewing, chattily and without much focus, the 'choices' of 25 people who had submitted their nominations for all this casting. The hosts admit up front that they know very little of modern TV and film, and are unfamiliar with the vast majority of names submitted as nominations. They seem to make their final choices based on a couple of photos in make-up and costume for other roles, and what they've heard about the actors' most well-known commercial parts. For instance, they didn't actually read Findlay's entry, as I did, to find her physical flaw; instead they went on about how Luthien is impossible to cast in any case because she represents an idealized character more perfect than any human could ever be. Well, yes. That actually applies to all of Tolkien's Elves, doesn't it? And short circuits the entire project. I stopped watching at that point. So these hosts do know something about the Tolkien book, but the disconnect between their familiarity with Tolkien and their casting, or finalizing the casting of, this 'film project' seems odd. So sorry, I can't respond more deeply than this. I will suggest it's a bit of a stretch to ask folks to watch a 2:18 video in order to understand a post.

What is the end goal in mind with this project? Are they planning on actually attempting to hire all of these actors and make this? If not, why bother with this at all? Sorry to be a downer, but I don't understand the purpose.

It's an exercise in adaptation, entirely theoretical, and authorized by the Tolkien estate (since there's no money made off it).

This is just one piece of the puzzle; the other parts involves scriptwriting, plot details, sets, props, costumes, and music. As of right now, they're trying to decide whether or not to compress 456 years of the First Age (the rising of the Sun to the duel between Fingolfin and Morgoth) into a single season of 13 episodes.

According to the website https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/, the goal of this project is:
The Silmarillion Film Project is an educational exercise and thought experiment being conducted by the Mythgard Institute of Signum University as a means of fostering an understanding of and appreciation for The Silmarillion and the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as encouraging Tolkien research, scholarship, and commentary. It is neither the purpose nor intention of the Silmarillion Film Project, its hosts, the Mythgard Institute, or Signum University to create an audiovisual adaptation of The Silmarillion. I haven't delved too deeply into the project contents, but reading through a few of the scripts is very interesting! For example, check out their Season 1 Finale https://forums.signumuniversity.org/...ion-finale-time.235/ which centers on the Siege of Utumno. The whole project seems like an interesting thought experiment, but I do agree with you that to go all the way to casting for the sake of this thought experiment seems a bit strange...

Brendan Gleeson should be Aule- with a giant hammer. But he would probably make a cool Dwarf too. Liam Neesom for Thingol with Kathryn Zeta Jones as Melian. Tom Cruise as Feanor, Christian Bale as Maedhros and Eric Bana as Fingolfin now there's some star power. Oh and Chris Hemsworth as Hurin or Turin and Gerard Butler for Eonwe. Maybe Hugh Jackman could play an Easterling and Anthony Hopkins could play old Hurin and also be a narrator.

It helps for concepts of the characters and costuming (another undertaking that takes place late each season). Two sessions this season were devoted to how the characters should look and act and who to introduce this season, both in the Frame which centers around Bilbo visiting Dale and Erebor seven years after The Hobbit and the main story, which encompasses Fingon's rescue of Maedhros to the debut of Glaurung in First Age 260.
