Is there religious significance to Gandalf's glyph in Arda?

It is the elf rune for G [In reply to] Can't Post

So at one level (perhaps the only level?) It’s a monogram, Gandalf initialling stuff. My sense is that this is how it’s used on his fireworks, as his hasty clue left on Weathertop, and to initial his PS comments in his letter to Frodo.

Religion is a bit of an odd thing in Middle-earth. We don’t read of temples or organised rites. The nearest is the elves in the Hall of Fire singing a song about Elbereth, but I can see that as either like some Catholics singing a hymn, or like some Irish people singing Danny Boy (Danny Boy not, I think being a god).

On the other hand, you might meet in Middle-Earth creatures who have personally met and talked to the Valar.

So, in short- I don’t think any religious significance can be deduced from the text. Of course that doesn’t mean it can’t be implied, but that’s something the reader is doing to the text.

Also, could we consider that the ‘Standing Silence’ [In reply to] Can't Post

may have a religious connotation?

Probably not meant to specifically. Just Tolkien waxing eloquently as is his wont perhaps.
And as you say likely simply ‘something the reader is doing to the text’.

The Standing Silence [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello BG my old friend
You've come to talk with us again
Because of questions about Gandalf's Glyph.
I hope you're feeling well, not sore or stiff.
But the questions you have planted in my brain
Still remain
About the standing silence..

Hmm - I'm not sure that effort's Art (or even Paul) - but I think you're right the standing silence seems pretty like an observance to me!
