"like tuning into a river of sound which is always there" Can't Post

In this eleven-minute video history of Western classical music, that line (at 2:15) describing the effect of early polyphony (as a recording of the first full setting of the Catholic mass plays in the background) struck a chord, specifically this one:

"Then the enchantment became more and more dreamlike, until he felt that an endless river of swelling gold and silver was flowing over him, too multitudinous for its pattern to be comprehended; it became part of the throbbing air about him, and it drenched and drowned him."

Treason doth neuer prosper? What's the Reason?
for if it prosper none dare call it treason.

A new way to read that line [In reply to] Can't Post

I always associated its imagery with the words of Elvish poetry which start the passage, but as you frame it, Frodo is rather mystically hearing the original Music of the Ainur. It feels, however, as if the gold v silver theme that is here was missing from the descriptions of the Music in the Ainulindale.

Thanks for linking polyphony, which is a strong component of the Music's conception, with the Mass that Tolkien loved.
