I made a playlist for the three big summer holidays in the U.S., which of course was in play for Independence Day. In addition to the usual, I also added a lot of music evoking some of the places in the country I've enjoyed most in my travels. Some were easy to compile (Northern Exposure theme for the ride on the Denali Star, Rocky Mountain High for Rocky Mountain NP, Georgia On My Mind for Savannah, etc.), while others were a bit harder to find songs for. I figure that's part of what the armed forces are fighting for and we love about the country (in addition to our home towns, of course) and it would be more interesting (and last longer) than just the usual marching band staples.

started by Elgar (it would have been his third) and completed by Anthony Payne. I heard it on the radio last year at the Proms, fell in love with it, and managed to find a CD. Different orchestra but still a good rendering - Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, conductor Tadaaki Otaka. I really like Elgar's other two symphonies as well, and his orchestral piece "In the South" (Gondor, to me!), and his "Sea Pictures".
