Aragorn fighting Sauron at the Black Gate Can't Post

in the behind the scenes stuff, it is shown that originally Aragorn was to fight Sauron himself at the Black Gate, and not the CGI troll. I am curious what the reaction here would have been if that had been the case?

On one hand, it sounds pretty dang cool and a neat bookend to the FOTR prologue.

On the other hand, it might have taken away from Frodo's journey as well.

Not cool at all in my opinion... [In reply to] Can't Post

Glad, that they reworked that scene, as well as Arwen in Helm's Deep.

I dunno [In reply to] Can't Post

On the one hand, its a nice summation of Aragorn's story. On the other hand, I'm happy with the finished version where there's still a battle of wits between Aragorn and Sauron, both with the Palantir and later in front of the gates.

i'm not sure [In reply to] Can't Post

That Sauron in any format would come and physically fight himself if he did not have too, why take the risk? Although I do have a sneaky feeling that such a scene would be cool if only it did not as you say marginalise Frodo's journey. Maybe Sauron could be beating Aragorn and about to slay Aragorn when the Ring going into the fire saves the day.

Good point. [In reply to] Can't Post

The last time Sauron engaged in a physical confrontation, it didn't go very well for him.

Dark Lords and physical confromtations... [In reply to] Can't Post

Melkor's last physical confrontation didn't go as well as he hoped either, even though he won in the end. There may be a reason they, like Denethor, prefer to lead from a place of safety..

It might have been possible [In reply to] Can't Post

For Aragorn and Gandalf to provoke Sauron. Sauron was not above acting in emotion over common sense!
