It's 100% the Wilhelm Scream. What makes it weirder is that you can hear his voice underneath it. It trails off at the end. So they went out of their way to cover up his actual scream.

It begins with the actor’s voice and evolves into the sound effect. You may think it’s not comedic, but generations of filmgoers will recognize it as a sound effect joke used to signal the comedic death of a non-character / battle fodder. It was 100% inappropriate for that moment.
