New Book from John Howe - 'A Middle-earth Traveller' Can't Post

Listed at Amazon for October 4:

Quote
Let acclaimed Tolkien artist John Howe take you on an unforgettable journey across Middle-earth, from Bag End to Mordor, in this richly illustrated sketchbook fully of previously unseen artwork, anecdotes and meditations on Middle-earth.

Middle-earth has been mapped, Bilbo’s and Frodo's journeys plotted and measured, but it remains a wilderland for all that. The roads as yet untravelled far outnumber those down which J.R.R. Tolkien led us in his writings.

A Middle-earth Traveller presents a walking tour of Tolkien's Middle-earth, visiting not only places central to his stories, but also those just over the hill or beyond the horizon. Events from Tolkien's books are explored – battles of the different ages that are almost legend by the time of The Lord of the Rings; lost kingdoms and ancient myths, as well as those places only hinted at: kingdoms of the far North and lands beyond the seas.

Sketches that have an 'on-the-spot' feel to them are interwoven with the artist's observations gleaned from Tolkien's books as he paints pictures with his words as well as his pencil. He also recollects his time spent working alongside Peter Jackson on the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies. Combining concept work produced for films, existing Middle-earth art and dozens of new paintings and sketches exclusive to this book, A Middle-earth Traveller will take the reader on a unique and unforgettable journey across Tolkien's magical landscape.

I can't wait to see this book! [In reply to] Can't Post

What a treasure trove! I had it pre-order via US Amazon a while ago, and they sent me an email cancelling the order because they couldn't nail down the information. Now they show it as unavailable. SO I have pre-ordered it through Amazon UK. :)

Thanks for this. I'm so looking forward to this one!

Good Lord... [In reply to] Can't Post

That makes 3 new Tolkien books for 2018! I guess they really are ramping up for the series. I'm not a huge-gantic JH fan but I'm a sucker for art books so I'm definitely getting this!

Sounds very interesting. [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't have any Middle-earth art books, yet. This one sounds like a great place to start, concerning art.

(ah, the power of the "Publisher's Blurb," eh? *wink, wink, nudge, nudge, knowwhatImeanVern?*)

It has been postponed a few times... [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope October is the real release date for John Howe's book now. Must-have!

In October 2019 there will be a Hobbit Sketchbook by Alan Lee as well:
Amazon UK

Then there's Ian Nathan's book about PJ & Middle-Earth "Anything You Can Imagine" coming out in a few weeks.

And of course "The Fall Of Gondolin"...

An Alan Lee book too? [In reply to] Can't Post

I knew about John Howe's book and have been anticipating that, but an Alan Lee one as well - and The Fall of Gondolin to look forward to. That's wonderful, I can't wait - thanks for the link. Smile

You can order the Alan Lee book right now, gramma; it was published in 2005! Cool

Er...... [In reply to] Can't Post

..... double mistaken identity? Cool

I know I haven't been around much for a while, Otaku (and it's frustrating, I miss TORn) but I'm not gramma and I wasn't talking about the Alan Lee LotR Sketchbook - which I have, signed by the man himself - but his forthcoming Hobbit Sketchbook.

Other than that, hello! Tongue

Sorry! [In reply to] Can't Post

After I started my reply, I got it in my head that I was responding to one of grammaboodawg's messages and not yours. Blush

And I conflated Alan Lee's new book with his Lord of the Rings Sketchbook. As you noted, double-mistake on my part! No hard feelings? Tongue
