They say it is the first step that costs the effort. I do not find it so. I am sure I could write unlimited 'first chapters'. I have indeed written many.
-Letter #23

So what Middle-earth stories did Tolkien begin that he later thought better of?

Happiness: money matters, but less than we think and not in the way that we think. Family is important and so are friends, while envy is toxic -- and so is excessive thinking. Beaches are optional. Trust is not. Neither is gratitude. - The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner as summarized by Lily Fairbairn. And a bit of the Hobbit reading thrown in never hurts. - NottaSackville

The New Shadow [In reply to] Can't Post

Quote
I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless — while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors — like Denethor or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow — but it would have been just that. Not worth doing.
—J.R.R. Tolkien

We are the fighting Uruk-Hai! We slew the great warrior! Well, yeah, first he killed a bunch of us and another whole lot of Mauhúr's lads, and we had to shoot enough arrows into him to drop a Mûmak. But we got him!

And Rose drew him in, and set him on the harpsichord bench, and put little Wilhelm Friedemann upon his lap.

He began composing a fugue. 'Well, I'm Bach,' he said.

Chapter One: The Great Expectations of Miss Lobelia Bracegirdle of Hardbottle [In reply to] Can't Post

Tolkien intended to write of the many disappointments, trials and tribulations of her middle years, but also of acts of heroism and of the esteem and affection with which she was held by all of Hobbitdom at the end of her long life.

What hints were there from her childhood that the stage was being set for her remarkable place in history? The author began by recounting her many youthful escapades and then how this ambitious, fiery girl from Hardbottle married into the prominent Sackville-Baggins clan, bringing her into the swirl of events which concluded the Third Age.

In our own Age, this irrepressible Miss would no doubt have a Multi-Book-Series dedicated to her exploits followed by, at the very least, a trilogy of action films. At the time, the author considered his feisty creation worthy of, at the very least, her own novel, but his publishers read the first chapter and declared her "much much too unladylike for our readers" and refused to advance him a penny on it. Times being what they were, he focused on her husband's unprepossessing cousins Bilbo and Frodo and did manage to make something of them in the end. Tolkien retained a soft spot for his heroine, however, finding a place for her in the Shire but having to bear the indignities to her reputation after the editors had their way with her.

Sad but too true. Evil

Little House in the Lone-lands.

Tolkien never got around to telling the story of the adventure of Sam's daughter: Elanor in Wilderland.

First book titled: The Hobbiton Hero Returns

"Rosie Cotton thought she'd found the man of her dreams in Samwise Gamgee, the quintessential boy-next-door. Before that perfect romance could blossom, however, everything flew to pieces when an unspeakable tragedy tore them apart. Yet when Sam reappeared in her life, the sparks that flew were as explosive as the day they first met."
