R.I.P. Stephen Hawking. Can't Post

The physicist and author of A Brief History of Time has died at age 76.

Here's a Tolkien connection: Kristine Larsen, who has authored many scholarly articles on Tolkien and astronomy, also wrote a biography of Hawking, whom she once met at a conference.

May he rest in peace. [In reply to] Can't Post

A remarkable man, and a remarkable life that was far longer than predicted.

Thanks for the Tolkien connection, NEB.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Farewell, sir! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm still processing this, though Dr. Hawking's passing was not completely unexpected given his physical condition and age. My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

I've read several of his papers and his books. His work and life were inspiring. He will be missed by many. :`(

yes [In reply to] Can't Post

a remarkable man who touched us all I suspect.

I am a dreamer of words, of written words. I think I am reading; a word stops me. I leave the page. The syllables of the words begin to move around … The words take on other meanings as if they had the right to be young.

We are the fighting Uruk-Hai! We slew the great warrior! Well, yeah, first he killed a bunch of us and another whole lot of Mauhúr's lads, and we had to shoot enough arrows into him to drop a Műmak. But we got him!

R.I.P. to a superior intellect and an important contributor to cosmology. [In reply to] Can't Post

I’ll always remember his playing poker with Isaac Newton & Albert Einstein on ‘Star Trek TNG’.

Just saw breaking news [In reply to] Can't Post

that he's been granted the rare honor of a Westminster Abbey burial. His ashes will be interred near those of Darwin and Newton.
