Key moment starts at 1:47. As commenters on the Mythsoc listserv have noted, Colbert pronounces "Eärendil" incorrectly, although for most people that would be credited as a game try. - link deleted due to political content at the link site. Feel free to quote the relevant sentence or two from the video.

"...he built a boat of timber felled in Nimbrethil to journey in; her sails he wove of silver fair, of silver were her lanterns made, her prow was fashioned like a swan, and light upon her banners laid." We are the fighting Uruk-Hai! We slew the great warrior! Well, yeah, first he killed a bunch of us and another whole lot of Mauhúr's lads, and we had to shoot enough arrows into him to drop a Mûmak. But we got him!

Some of those folks on the Mythsoc listserv are pretty demanding! I wouldn't want to have to be held to that kind of standard. I doubt I could do much better than Colbert.

Even Tolkien could be inconsistent.

For example, as Jason Fisher has noted, listen to Tolkien's pronunciation of "Sméagol" in audio recordings he made of passages from The Lord of the Rings.

Can you name the most famous boat in all of Tolkien's works? This doesn’t ask for a ‘ship’s name’ (naturally Vingilot comes to mind), but to just name the most famous ship (ok, boat).
. . . and there was a white ship lying . . . and the sails were draw up, and the wind blew, and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth; and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore glimmered and was lost. I do love the tale of Eärendil, Elwing, and Vingilot (or Vingilótë if you wish); but the White Ship that carried Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, et al into the Far West does trump Vingilot (to me).
‘. . . the rule of no realm is mine . . . But all worthy things that are in peril . . . those are my care. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?' Gandalf to Denethor

But I did take "name" to refer to a named ship. Mea culpa.

Same as the difference between Caesar and Kaiser. Real language is messy and inconsistent, as master philologist Tolkien would know.

...topatoes. I have no idea how to pronounce that, but they apparently exist in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
