LOTR Lunar Readalong, week of 1419 Solmath 19: The Great River

In this week's Readalong, Sam sees the unlikely new moon "glimmering in the remote lakes". Once again, the moon phases this year are not an exact repeat of 1942's moon phases, so the new moon comes a day later relative to this year's reckoning. Still, the moon will not be visible until the day after the new moon (after sunset on February 16th this year, but not until the 17th for most of the eastern hemisphere). The week ends the day before the "Breaking of the Fellowship" and will be the last week of linear readings (until after the destruction of the One Ring). Starting with next week's readings, there will be at least 2 (but up to 4) parallel readings each day!

Gollum could lurk around the Company's boats under a moonless sky the night of Solmath 19, with only a thin crescent moon rising just a couple of hours before dawn on Solmath 20.

1419 Solmath 25 is also the date of the "First Battle of the Fords of Isen", so those with a copy of Unfinished Tales may want to read the beginning of that chapter as well!
