"Jangles Keys!* It's FIESTA FRIDAY again, & again, & again... Can't Post

Greetings to One and All on this Groundhog Day!! I'll be your bartender for the day whilst our lovely Altaira is called to RL demands. *whispers* It feels like I've been here before. :o

For those of us who are in the thick of Winter, February 2nd is a day that will foretell when Spring will finally arrive. Steeped in history, Groundhog Day is one that I can't wait for! I consider it halfway through Winter.

I hear Punxsutawney Phil woke to enough sunrise to cast a shadow. Oh my... does that sound foreboding!? CAST A SHADOW! The same happened here in mid-Michigan. The groundhog in my back yard (t'is true! I have a resident prophet) also saw his shadow BIG TIME! So that means 6 more weeks of Winter for me. *sigh*

Regardless of what some dusty rodent may say, we're still a day closer to Spring in those parts of the world enjoying Winter. So let's toast to Spring! And for others... let's toast to Fall. A BEAUTIFUL time of the year... and my favourite :D

Tell us about your week looking back and your weekend looking ahead.

*slams jukebox* The Groundhog Day Song

Groundhog Day (Canadian French: Jour de la Marmotte; Pennsylvania German: Grundsaudaag, Murmeltiertag) is a traditional holiday celebrated on February 2. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks.

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, with Punxsutawney Phil. Groundhog Day, already a widely recognized and popular tradition,[5] received widespread attention as a result of the 1993 film Groundhog Day.[6]

Is it February already? [In reply to] Can't Post

Greetings, gramma! Our Connecticut groundhog did NOT see his shadow (it was snowing this morning) - so we're due for an early Spring, hopefully!

Could I have a mocha cappuccino, please? It's now sunny, but blustery and chilly! It's supposed to stay that way, so looks like a good weekend to catch up on some reading. Smile

Are you ready for your fireplace to be installed, gramma?

Congrats on the possibly early Spring. I hope you stay warm and the wind is at least mild. That makes the cold even more intense!

I WANT MY FIREPLACE! It would come in quite handy right now ;) I'm hoping to hear from my builder early in the Spring (April/May), but my fireplace a side-job. So it's "We get there when we get there". But that's okay as long as it's done by this fall!

Have a wonderful weekend, m'dear!

Enjoy your weekend too, gramma! *sends warm hugs*

There are no groundhogs in "The Lord of the Rings". [In reply to] Can't Post

A Diet Coke, if you please, gramma.

In Europe, whose mythic past Middle-earth is supposed to represent, there is no such animal (although there are marmots, a related species, in the Alps).

But from your Wikipedia link, I learned that in Germany, there was a tradition that if on today, Candlemas or the Feast of the Presentation, a bear saw its shadow, that winter would continue for another month. As bears were extirpated, that weather-lore switched to the badger. Today is Dachstag.

Both bears and badgers are mentioned in LOTR, of course. Does anyone know which hobbit family is named for badgers?

The gf and I are down to watch the Bill Murray classic tonight. Always fun. I'll have a V-8 with a dash of Worcestershire and two dashes of Louisiana Hot Sauce, please. Smile

We are the fighting Uruk-Hai! We slew the great warrior! Well, yeah, first he killed a bunch of us and another whole lot of Mauhr's lads, and we had to shoot enough arrows into him to drop a Mmak. But we got him!

We do have bears in my neck of the woods; but I think I prefer the badgers and g'hogs. Hey! When I was growing up, we had wolverines in the field next to our house. Now THOSE are nasty mean!

Which hobbit family named for badgers? Oh... I used to know this one... *thonks head* nope... it's gone :(

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

Out came Badger-brock with his snowy forehead
and his dark blinking eyes. In the hill he quarried
with his wife and many sons.

-The Adventures of Tom Bombadil

There were many Bagginses and Boffins, and also many Tooks and Brandybucks; there were various Grubbs (relations of Bilbo Baggins' grandmother), and various Chubbs (connexions of his Took grandfather); and a selection of Burrowses, Bolgers, Bracegirdles, Brockhouses, Goodbodies, Hornblowers and Proudfoots.
-A Long-expected Party

"My dear Bagginses and Boffins," he began again; "and my dear Tooks and Brandybucks, and Grubbs, and Chubbs, and Burrowses, and Hornblowers, and Bolgers, Bracegirdles, Goodbodies, Brockhouses and Proudfoots."
-ibid

Then there was a dead silence, until suddenly, after several deep breaths, every Baggins, Boffin, Took, Brandybuck, Grubb, Chubb, Burrows, Bolger, Bracegirdle, Brockhouse, Goodbody, Hornblower, and Proudfoot began to talk at once.
-ibid

******************************************
I met a Balrog on the stair.
He had some wings that weren't there.
They weren't there again today.
I wish he would just fly away.

On January 15. Then he disappears for about six weeks and shows up again in Fangorn on March 1.

I could mention when he saw a Shadow(fax) in Rohan, but I won't.

"We're having a heatwave... [In reply to] Can't Post

"A tropical heatwave"

Monday was a holiday here. The Mr and I worked on Monday, then took Tuesday off and had a *fabulous* day kayaking and swimming at a lovely dune lake. Not all that far from us, but in all the years we've lived here we've never been to that lake before. We certainly will again.

We've had a storm since then (very destructive further south, but not bad here). The temperature has now dropped several degrees, which is quite a relief. Six more weeks of that heat would be rather too much :)

Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend, keeping warm or cool as you prefer.

Headed momentarily to a game night with some friends. I don't know if that means something like Twister (please, no!) or closer to Monopoly. Such mystery! Already exhausted from this week, so I don't need more thinking.

Movies, naps, work are in order this weekend. I'm a creature of habit, I suppose. Still going strong with one poem per day.

TOO EARLY, PEOPLE!

This is a low-energy week for a lot of people I know.. including me! I blame part of it on getting a flu shot on Monday; but I blame it more on the incredible full moon this week. Wierd stuff always happens on the full moon.

I hope you had fun at game night. You ought to turn people on to Bananagram. It's like scrabble, but without a board. I like that each player works on their own. I don't really care for board games... especially monopoly! I'm not good at grown-up stuff ;) But I'll play Bananagram anytime... sometimes even solo. Like solitaire.

Have a great and restful weekend... and I hope next week isn't as intense at work :)

Quote

The game consists of 144 lettered tiles that are placed face down on the playing surface. The same number of tiles is drawn by each player, and at any player's call of "Split!", all players turn over their tiles to reveal the lettered sides. Each player begins arranging the letters to form words, which must be connected in intersecting or interlocking manner (i.e. word-tiles are not isolated, at least not before the first "Peel!"). When a player uses up all of their tiles, they call out "Peel!," and each player must draw a new tile from the pool of remaining tiles, called the "bunch." The name "Bananagrams" is a play on the word anagrams, as one must often rearrange the words one has already formed in order to allow newly-drawn tiles to be placed into one's grid.

If at any time during play, a player has a letter or letters that he or she does not wish to fit into their word arrangement, that player can announce "Dump!" and exchange any letter for three tiles from the "bunch".
Play continues with players announcing "Peel!" when they again fit all their tiles into their crossword-style word arrangements until there are not enough remaining tiles in the "bunch" for all players to take one; at this point, the first player to have placed all of his or her tiles into their word grid calls out "Bananas!" and is declared the winner if all of their words are valid upon inspection.

He only works one day a year, but still. Tongue

Hope you avoid the flu! My mom works at a grade school and is trying to fight off getting sick.

Bananagram sounds fun. I like the twist of everyone having to play individually. We ended up playing an indie board game (yep, that is a thing) brought by a friend who has worked for some indie game companies. It was fun, but I sometimes get lost in the strategy/deception bits.

Thanks, you too!
