The One Ring Forums: Off Topic: The Pollantir:
Why are we here?
Poll: Why are we here?
To praise God.
To praise Tolkien.
To love.
To be loved.
To be happy.
To be all that we can be.
Because we seem to be made to suffer; it's our lot in life.
Because everybody has to be somewhere.
Because of the intrinsic randomness of quantum physics.
Because we are not there.
To be stewards of the environment.
To be a Duracell battery for our robot overlords.
To live with dignity in the face of absurdity and the world's indifference.
To consume mass quantities.
To serve the State.
To serve Man.
To serve tacos.
Forty-two.
To be fruitful and multiply.
To eat, drink, and be merry.
To keep the dark gods of chaos at bay.
Because it seemed like a good idea at the time.
To ask "Why are we here?"
To provide a target for the next mass extinction event.
To make sure there is asparagus in April, and tomatoes in summer, and broccoli in the fall.
To serve as a bad example for the inhabitants of Alpha Centauri.
To accumulate good karma.
To accumulate bad karma.
To be excellent to each other.
To dance.
Aliens.
Wouldn't you like to know?
To try to be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try to live together in peace with people of all creeds and nations.
Other.

You mean, here on TORN? [In reply to] Can't Post

I voted for more than one reason, and naturally I can't remember them all. I'd say to eat, drink and be merry would probably be my favorite reason for "being here," but honestly, I haven't the foggiest idea!Blush

honestly [In reply to] Can't Post

I choose to believe this, which various mystics of various religions have all said much better than I can, but at greater length:

"we choose to be born so we can learn stuff that we can't learn on the other plane, like how to deal with our own suffering and that of others, which helps us not only grow our own souls, but in the long run contributes to the ongoing creation of the universe."

But I chose "to be excellent to each other" because that pretty much is what it boils down to.

Obvious to me [In reply to] Can't Post

Christians don't have to ask existential questions. We know why we are here: to love God as He loves us and to prepare us for the next life. Heart

but Darkstone this is the best thing I've read all day. Had me laughing and waxing philosophical at the same time. Loved it. Kudos many times over to you for creating this and kudos to those who responded. THANK YOU.

To praise God? [In reply to] Can't Post

If God created us and put us here to praise God, what does that say about God? Not much good IMHO.

Praise Tarim? [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't quite decide if having been Pope of the Eastern Church of Tarim gives Cerebus more authority concerning this question, or less. Then again, the anthropomorphic aardvark has also literally met his own creator (Dave Sim) for whatever that's worth!

Is there an answer key in the back of the book? Maybe we’ll find the answer there. C’mon, Darkstone, look it up.
