Absolutely [In reply to] Can't Post

... and thanks for the link. He's joking - that was never a serious remark (things are rarely serious when Graham Norton is around!)

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood and every spring
there is a different green. . .

Olorin wanderin [In reply to] Can't Post

It looks to me that Tolkien considered some early wanderings likely, at least. After describing the reincarnation of Glorfindel in the First Age (before the Exiles were allowed to return), JRRT added:

"That Olorin, as was possible for one of the Maiar, had already visited Middle-earth and had become acquainted not only with the Sindarin Elves and others deeper in Middle-earth, but also with Men, is likely, but nothing is [> has yet been] said of this." JRRT, Glorfindel II, Last Writings

I also believe that Olorin's Elessar-jewel-vist to Galadriel was in the Second Age, although granted that's but one internal version (of two possibilities) about a "second" Elessar.

As for Ian M., personally, sometimes I think he was too much ham to Jackson's cheese, but in any case (under new direction or not) I prefer a whole new cast. MMM, ham and cheese.
