Raise a glass to J.R.R. Tolkien on his twelfty-sixth birthday! Can't Post

Help celebrate and mark J.R.R. Tolkien's twelfty-sixth (126th) birthday by joining fans all over the world in The Tolkien Society's annual Birthday Toast.

Tolkien was born on this day in 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. On this day, you might read a favorite passage or two from Tolkien's writings or you can raise a glass to our beloved author and creator of Middle-earth at 9pm (your local time). The toast is simply to: "The Professor!"

Share your toast on Twitter or Facebook using the hashtag #TolkienBirthdayToast. Join TORn as we wholeheartedly wish a happy birthday to The Professor, - who's life's work has come to mean so much to all of us. Happy birthday, J.R.R. Tolkien!

*raises mug* Praise him with great praise [In reply to] Can't Post

His world has changed mine... making it so much richer and filling it with adventure, creativity, and friendships.

Thank you, Dear Professor. A true Wizard with a hobbity heart.

*raises mug* The Professor! [In reply to] Can't Post

That is a handsome portrait of him, isn't it! Is that the emblem of Gondor on the chair's backrest? And a Hobbity window. How many other Middle-earth "hints" are in there?

Donato is a wonderful artist. [In reply to] Can't Post

Here is a link to a larger image.

I see that Tolkien is painting, or at least inspecting, his "Bilbo Comes to the Huts of the Raft-Elves", having just put aside his illustration of the Gates of Moria. Of course the manuscripts underneath are fabulously messy and disordered. The Party Tree is visible outside the round window. Original jacket editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are on his bookshelf. There may be other meaningful books as well - I can't tell.

Taking things a little more broadly, the lamp is Art Nouveau style, which the New Line films used to represent 'Elvish' style art.

And I can't make out the marks on the tea cups, but they look like they could be another Middle-earth clue or two!

Thank you! I see even more "symbols" now! [In reply to] Can't Post

In the smoke from Tolkien's pipe, are three eagles.

On the teacups are the symbols for Luthien and Beren.

There seem to be scenes painted on the stones surrounding the window, but I can't make them out.

The messy papers [In reply to] Can't Post

resemble the papers Gandalf was leafing through and piled up in Gondor's library.

I tried to get a closer look at the cups

These look like the heraldic devices (emblems) of .Luthien ...and.... Beren

Check out the tiles around the window and on the wall behind the chair. They look like pictures portraying different parts of the stories. I can't make them out very well, though.

Where's Waldo!? :D

Thanks! It will if I have anything to say about it. After all, what is more exciting than The Lord of the Rings? Smile

We are the fighting Uruk-Hai! We slew the great warrior! Well, yeah, first he killed a bunch of us and another whole lot of Mauhr's lads, and we had to shoot enough arrows into him to drop a Mmak. But we got him
