Case closed: the two missing Silmarils have been 'found'. Can't Post

Scott Alexander has a compelling argument about the location of the Silmarils that were thrown away by Maglor and Maedhros.

(His evidence for Maglor's Silmaril starts off well then gets a bit thin, but his argument for Maedhros's Silmaril is too perfect for words.)

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

Tarantino is thought to have been inspired by BuŮuel here. [In reply to] Can't Post

Specifically by the mysterious box in Belle de jour (1967).

Not too Film 101 for Tarantino! [In reply to] Can't Post

But Hitchcock's MacGuffin's typically aren't deliberately mysterious. The audience just accepts them as story devices for the sake of moving the plot, but doesn't wonder what they are.

Very ingenious! [In reply to] Can't Post

Enjoyed the essay, though some of the conclusions "smell of the lamp." I have always though that Mia had not stopped breathing from the overdose and was merely stuporous, and that the needle just woke her up. It is not easy to hit something in somebody's chest, even if it is as large as the heart, if the patient is slumped over.. We were trained to aspirate and only inject the epinephrine if we got blood backflow. But I just ascribed this to Tarantino's medical naivite. But now I'm having second thoughts... Wink

Edit: Stupid auto-correct, swallowing "bot" and caviling at "stuporous." Mad

We are the fighting Uruk-Hai! We slew the great warrior! Well, yeah, first he killed a bunch of us and another whole lot of Mauhķr's lads, and we had to shoot enough arrows into him to drop a MŻmak. But we got him!

Utumno and Santa Claws [In reply to] Can't Post

I actually thought this was a better fit:
http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/10063/20130905-0223/www.antisf.com.au/the-stories/twas-the-evening-after-christmas-in-invercargill-a-mystery.html

" "You've read in The Hobbit about goblins enslaving prisoners underground? You know in the Silmarillion Morgoth enslaves Elves in Angband?"
I dimly remembered. Harry remembered in greater detail. I eventually got him to shut up.
"Santa reputedly has millions of Elves making things for him. That clinched it. I took Emily to Mom's and I flew over here to see you." "

It's anyone's guess what Santa Claws is up to.
