I had never heard of this guy (sadly) until I heard about him as the director of Thor:Ragnarok. Besides mangling his name a few thousand times, I watched some interviews and... all I can say is what is it about Middle Earth that breeds these geniuses? I am now on a quest to find his other work. Love his wacky sense of humor and pretty much everything else. If you haven't seen this latest Thor, it takes things in a new direction, a fresh direction, it's fantastic!

is another of his films where the dialogue is ad-libbed and it's where his deadpan humour (and that of Jemain Clement, co-writer and co-director) really shines through. The movie Boy is both funny and disturbingly sad - Taika has ruminated on whether he makes sad comedies or funny tragedies. Also have a look at Hunt for the Wilderpeople and, if you can find it, the short film Two Cars One Night (for which he received an Oscar nom).
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. ...somewhere. I can only imagine Jemaine Clement and Taika in the same room... there would be a little mushroom cloud of Insane Genius and Hilarity above their heads... Even in Thor, there is that sad/funny thing going on. And somehow we get deeper into the reality of the characters... they become more human, more relatable.
