Amazon TV series and the Middle-earth movieverse

Do you think the Amazon TV series will establish its own continuity different from the Peter Jackson movieverse? If not, it might be tricky to deal with some movie alterations, like the Nazgûl entombment depicted in The Hobbit trilogy. I think recasting will be inevitable anyway.

That's not me being anti-Jackson, I just think it will be more interesting and exciting if this TV series detaches itself from the visual look and canon of the existing films and breaks new ground, with new art crews, actors etc, rather than simply working in the shadow and template that Peter Jackson set, this prequel series sounds like it will be almost entirely concocted by the screenwriters-if they are going to diverge so far from the canon of the novels, and taker such a gamble why not diverge from the existing films as well? The LOTR films will probably be rebooted anyway one day... Jackson's films will stand the test of time (or not) based on their own strong points, whether this TV series works or not it won't effect my opinions on the existing films (and honestly...after The Hobbit films I've grown much less fond of Jackson's interpretations of the source material...) Middle- earth has inspired artists, writers and musicians for decades, I think it will be exciting to see this expanded to a new generation of film/televsion makers.

I don’t think it will explicitly rebuke the films.

While I’d love for them to completely stick with the continuity of the films, I expect something more in the middle. They’ll allow some freedom with casting, story details, etc. But design wise, I predict they will stick closely. Particularly if they enlist John and Alan for the Art Design, as I expect them to.
"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that." - Viggo Mortensen

Just age Ben Mendelsohn up a bit. Uncanny.

If a decision comes down to fidelity with Tolkien's legendarium or with Jackson's film-continuity (such as when was Aragorn born, or when did Gandalf first investigate Dol Guldur), I would rather see the series remain more faithful to Tolkien. That doesn't mean that characters such as Tauriel couldn't be introduced into the show (assuming there are no rights issues).

there is an uncanny likeness there.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. Mendelsohn is a great choice, but his Hollywood career has really taken off in recent years (rightfully so), so he'd be a hard get. Then again, if they do end up bringing Gandalf back into the fold they may want to get a big name actor for that particular role. Then you can get Noah Taylor for Saruman.

As I said in the other thread, I hope for a clean slate for the makers of this series. Design-wise some things will inevitably look similar. But despite the billiance of the music and the style of the PJ LotR movies, I want something new. An new vision. Tolkien's world is big and rich enough for that. That is also why I hope they turn to other artists to base their artistic vision of Middle-earth on than How and Lee. Ted Nasmith is indeed a possibility there. And story-wise I do not want them to be restricted by the PJ movieverse, especially if they cover the time between TH and LotR (which we don't know yet, of course).
"I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at." J.R.R. Tolkien We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

This being produced by New Line/ Warner I don't think it will ignore the movies at all, but rather complement them. I think the best they could do business wise is exactly that because what has allowed even this series to ever happen is the movie's success and their fan base which is huge! and "competing" with that, right now, starting from scratch will divide audience and kill chances of the level of success they are going after.
