Our wonderfully charming pipeline to the maestro  had this to say on Twitter this evening:
"I can’t promise that #HowardShore will be involved with Amazon’s #LordOfTheRings project—but I can promise that I’ll tell him he should be!  "
"In all seriousness—and in answer to the many Qs I received today—it all depends on a huge number of factors. But here’s hoping!"
Now I know many will say that they want a different composer in the mix (for a new take on Middle-earth and so on...). But even if I didn't badly want Shore to continue his musical exploration of Middle-earth, the only other composer I'd want for the job is no longer walking the earth (James Horner). So I'm left with Shore by default.
In seriousness, though, if they are breaking continuity with the films and going a different route, it will definitely be a new composer - someone who works in television most likely.
But if not, it's nice to know that Doug is all set and ready to nudge Howard.

I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that."

I want Shore back so badly. Even if the show is completely separate from Jackson's universe, Shore can just write new themes and leitmotifs for this "new" world. It may or may not happen, but oh God do I want it badly...

I know that this is going to be a completely new vision of Middle-earth, but Howard Shore's score for the film trilogy is just beyond mesmerizing. In my opinion, he created the greatest soundtrack to anything of all time. I hope that he will be somewhat involved in this project, perhaps he might help whoever the new composer will be, but I hope he will be involved in some way.

is an essential part of Middle Earth for me. I'm listening to "An Unexpected Journey" very often now, besides LOTR Complete Recordings...

I couldn't imagine anyone else to make a score for Middle-Earth!
...and the sound of the kettle on his hearth was ever after more musical than it had been even in the quiet days before the Unexpected Party

Just a few years after The Hobbit. Of course I want Howard Shore, but the music is such a big part of Middle-earth for me, I’m afraid to hope, so I’ll just calmly follow the proceedings with my “nauva i nauva” attitude

I think if they want the series to be set in the contunity of PJ's movies (which I actually am not sure they should...) then him coming back would indeed be great.
But if they work on a whole different approach or simply want to establish a new vision of all this than I think it will be best to also create a completely new take on the music.

On the one hand I'd give just about anything to have more Howard Shore Middle-earth music. On the other hand, what would his music be like if the vision of the world is different.
It's hard to imagine any TV show spending that kind of money on a score, but you never know.
Much like my thoughts on the design of the six films, there is no universe in which the music can be improved upon, so it is bound to disappoint. But it is exciting nonetheless to see how it plays out.

James was my absolute favorite composer, especially growing up. His scores were so emotional. I listened to them and wept for weeks after he died.
I was hit harder by his death than I have ever been for someone I didn’t know personally.

...are my favorite music in the world. I'm a score aficionado since age 8, I grew up discovering the music of Williams, Morricone, Horner, Elfman, Zimmer and others, but nothing could prepare me for what Shore created for LOTR. Listening to those themes for the first time, in my first viewing of FOTR back in 2002 was an absolutely unforgettable experience. I own the scores and listen to them on my iPod for several years now. The experience that I have immersing myself in this music is such an emotional, profound and powerful one, much like experiencing the films. I'm a colossal fan of his compositions for Middle-earth, The Hobbit as well. This music is a part of me.
As for the series, It would be awesome if he returned as composer. Don't know if they will call him, but I suspect that without PJ's involvement, he will decline, it's just a hunch, of course. If Amazon and company are aiming at a new composer, especially one with experience on TV, Abel Korzeniowski could be an excellent choice, he composed some exquisite, lush, beautiful music for the three short seasons of John Logan's series "Penny Dreadful". His work on that show really impressed me, maybe a bit dark for Middle-earth, but he has great depth as composer, just an idea.

I don't think Howard Shore will do the score for a TV series. He is too expensive for that kind of budget. But! he could come up with the main theme or something like that. But I don't think he needs to. He did his thing already and we are happy with it. I think it's time for new composers to expand this musical world and as someone jus said. Abel Korzeniowski would be my IDEAL choice in that case. Also Bear Mcreary!
