I have a half baked memory... [In reply to] Can't Post

of somewhere in Tolkien's letters or bio or something, he says something about leaving room for other hands wielding brush or pen to fill in the spaces...

Even the LOTR characters are kind of broadly painted, with lots of room for readers to fill in from their own experience.

As noted, the background stuff is more vague, figures seen in the mist, names in a geneology... this leaves plenty of room for (hopefully) good writers and actors to expand on a beloved universe.

What has developed in comic books comes to mind. How many interpretations have we had of Batman, Spiderman and others, in comics, TV, film, with different writers, actors, artists etc.

I think A TV series is a great idea, it will not please everyone, because we all have our own interpretation of this world... because it was left wide open enough for us to do that.

I think there's plenty of room to play.

Yes and no [In reply to] Can't Post

Originally, around late 1951:

But once upon a time (my crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging from the large and cosmogonic, to the level of romantic fairy-story-the larger founded on the lesser in contact with the earth, the lesser drawing splendour from the vast backcloths which I could dedicate simply to: to England; to my country.

It should possess the tone and quality that I desired, somewhat cool and clear, be redolent of our 'air' (the clime and soil of the North West, meaning Britain and the hither parts of Europe: not Italy or the Aegean, still less the East), and, while possessing (if I could achieve it) the fair elusive beauty that some call Celtic (though it is rarely found in genuine ancient Celtic things), it should be 'high', purged of the gross, and fit for the more adult mind of a land long now steeped in poetry. I would draw some of the great tales in fullness, and leave many only placed in the scheme, and sketched. The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama.

-Letter 131

However, by 1966 his position had somewhat changed:

I send you the enclosed impertinent contribution to my troubles. I do not know what the legal position is, I suppose that since one cannot claim property in inventing proper names, that there is no legal obstacle to this young ass publishing his sequel, if he could find any publisher, either respectable or disreputable, who would accept such tripe.

I have merely informed him that I have forwarded his letter and samples to you. I think that a suitable letter from Allen & Unwin might be more effective than one from me. I once had a similar proposal, couched in the most obsequious terms, from a young woman, and when I replied in the negative, I received a most vituperative letter.

-Letter 292

******************************************
The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.

aha! [In reply to] Can't Post

yes that is what I mostly sort of remembered.

I'd utterly forgotten the later bit.

Sigh.

When you create a story and send it out into the world it takes on a life of its own.

Even in 1951... [In reply to] Can't Post

...he was describing a mindset he no longer held ("my crest has long since fallen"), and he ends the paragraph you quote by calling it "absurd".

There's a feeling I get, when I look to the West...
