I missed these books somehow but am wondering what the difference is between the 2005 and 2011 updated editions. They are about $25-30 different in price on Amazon, but they both are listed as 176 pages. Also, is this book superseded by "Middle-earth Landscapes: Locations in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Film Trilogies" released last year? I am starting to plan a trip to New Zealand for my family in 2019 and LOTR locations are my main draw to the country. Thanks!

I think the more recent edition of the LotR Location Guidebook would be the wiser choice since it was updated after the release of the films. It would have more current information based on the massive interest in NZ & the films... and maybe addresses map/location concerns. I don't have the specific differences you're curious about, but I'd strongly suggest checking out reviews by people who have purchased the book(s). I checked on a few of them online for info on the differences before answering your post (goodreads/Amazon/etc.)... and I found there are some responses both pro and con (as there always will be ;). By the responses, you can tell who has the same interests as yours of what they want from the books. If you're planning on taking one of Brodie's books with you on your trip (squeeeeeeeeee! btw!), I'd go for the smaller ed. There were some good prices on Amazon, and editions are available on eBay. You might even find copies at your local library to get a hands-on preview. If you have a nearby University, checkout their online catalog and see if they have any of the books. I just retired from working in a University library where we purchased/processed materials... and I made sure we had several LotR/Tolkien/Middle-earth topics covered ;) You have plenty of time to research which book will best serve you (the fun part, imho!). If it were me, I'd get the most recent of the small editions AND get Middle-earth Landscapes: Location in LotR and Hobbit also by Brodie. :) Let us know what you come up with! :D
We have been there and back again. TIME Google Calendar 6th draft of TH:AUJ Geeky Observations List - November 28, 2013 4th draft of TH:DOS Geeky Observations List - May 15, 2014 5th draft of TH:BotFA Geeky Observations List - January 30, 2015 TORn's Geeky Observations Lists for LotR and The Hobbit
