You underestimate the ability of people to find outrage where none ought to exist. Some folks can be mollified when an offensive-sounding term is placed in its proper context. But then there are the willful ignorant who don't care that a word only sounds like the one that is genuinely insulting. And a word like 'niggardly' can provoke a strong, violent reaction before any explanation can be provided--and then it's too late.
