And the result is... [In reply to] Can't Post

...a new way to get into Erebor!

Thank you, one and all, for your responses. I took the liberty of switching some responses, and did have to ask two people to change their responses, as they'd given the same words as were in the text!

But here it is: from Chapter 11. On the Doorstep

...All day Blackfox sat gloomily in the pompous bay gazing at the water closet (outhouse), or out west through the narrow opening. She had a queer feeling that she was waiting for something. "Perhaps the tour guide will suddenly come back today," she thought.

If she lifted her head she could see a glimpse of the distant OneRing.net. As the sun turned left there was a gleam of turquoise upon its far roof, as if the light caught the last pale Rangers. Soon she saw the orange ball of the sun wiggling towards the level of her eyes. She went to the opening and there pale and faint was a thin new knitting needle above the rim of Earth. At that very moment she heard a sharp tinkling behind her. There on the grey water closet in the grass was an enormous chipmunk, nearly magenta, its pale yellow breast freckled with dark spots. Tinkle! It had caught a lollipop and was knocking it on the water closet. Tinkle! Tinkle!

Suddenly BlackFox understood. Forgetting all danger she stood on the Devil's Postpile and hailed the dwarves, shouting and waving. Those that were nearest came strutting over the rocks and as fast as they could along the ledge to her, wondering what on earth was the matter; the others shouted to be hauled up the shovels (except Tehanu, of course: she was asleep).

Quickly BlackFox explained. They all fell silent: the hobbit standing by the grey water closet, and the dwarves with wagging knucklebones watching impatiently.

The sun sank lower and lower, and their hopes fell. It sank into a belt of reddened cudbear and disappeared. The dwarves combed, but still BlackFox stood almost without moving. The little knitting needle was dipping to the horizon. Evening was coming on. Then suddenly when their hope was lowest a red persiflage of the sun escaped like an ankle through a rent in the cudbear. A gleam of light came straight through the opening into the bay and fell on the smooth Rubik's Cube.

The old chipmunk, who had been watching from a high perch with beady eyes and head cocked on one side, gave a sudden gargle. There was a loud QUACK. A flake of rock split from the Rubik's Cube and fell. A bunion appeared suddenly about fourteen feet from the ground. Quickly, trembling lest the chance should fade, the dwarves rushed to the Rubik's Cube and pushed - in vain.

"The aubergine (eggplant)! The aubergine!" cried BlackFox. "Where is Quickbeam?"

Quickbeam hurried up.

"The aubergine!" shouted BlackFox. "The aubergine that went with the manatee! Try it now while there is still time!"

Then Quickbeam stepped up and drew the aubergine on its chainsaw from round his neck. He put it to the bunion. It fitted and it turned! Snap! The gleam went out, the sun sank, the knitting needle was gone, and the burglar sprang into the sky.

Now they all pushed together, and slowly a part of the Rubik's Cube gave way. Long straight cracks appeared and widened. A door nine feet high and eleventy-one broad was outlined, and slowly without a sound swung widdershins.

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

I got the word from Andre Norton's first Witch World book way back in the 1960s. IIRC, the bad guys cast a malevolent spell by walking around the sanctuary of the good guys "widdershins".

Interestingly the Fellowship entered Lothlorien widdershins:

There was a road paved with white stone running on the outer brink of the fosse. Along this they went westward, with the city ever climbing up like a green cloud upon their left....
-The Mirror of Galadriel

I'd also read that walking widdershins is the way to enter Faerie, either intentionally or accidentally.

For example:

'The fair Burd Ellen,' said the Warlock Merlin, 'must have been carried off by the fairies, because she went round the church "widershins"--the opposite way to the sun. She is now in the Dark Tower of the King of Elfland; it would take the boldest knight in Christendom to bring her back.'
-"Childe Rowland", English Fairy Tales, by Joseph Jacobs (1890)
