Let's have some Hobbity HAIKUs Japanese haiku have been traditionally composed in 5-7-5 syllables. When poets started writing English haiku in the 1950's, they adopted this 5-7-5 form, thinking it created a similar condition for English-language haiku. This style is what is generally considered "traditional" English haiku. I'll kick it off with this: He saw lots of caves one kingly and one deadly, one with jools and swords One was Lonely but for a dragon now asleep in the deep, bones white Though the hardest was riddled with sadness deeper than the dark surround. Now home in his hole, clutter and books toppling o'er... "Oh, how I missed this!"

A hole in the ground. A larder precious and full. Happy the Hobbit.

(sniff) However it's written/read/said, it reduces me to puddles every time.

This is a bitter adventure no gold amends if it must end so. Yet I am glad that I have shared in your perils. I deserve no more. Food and cheer and song! Value above hoarded gold your merrier world. But, sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell, and I call you 'friend'.

I can feel this cadence in Tolkien's writing of this scene - amazing!
